Since 1971 Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board has provided a comprehensive continuum of high-quality essential and community-based services to citizens of the Peninsula who are living with a mental illness developmental disabilities and substance use disorders.

Whats your day like

As a Peer Recovery Specialist II - ACT you play a key role on the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team-a multidisciplinary group of medical behavioral health and rehabilitative professionals who collaborate to support individuals with severe and persistent mental illness. You will provide peer support to individuals who meet ACT admission criteria which typically include diagnoses such as Schizophrenia and other severe mental illnesses along with high service needs that interfere with independent living and community integration.

With lived experience and specialized training you recognize the signs and symptoms of mental illness including auditory and visual hallucinations and self-harming thoughts and use strategies like positive self-talk and empathetic engagement to support recovery. You advocate for clients by addressing their physical financial and social needs helping them navigate available resources and services.

Through outreach daily living support and ongoing monitoring you foster meaningful relationships built on trust and mutual respect serving as a beacon of hope for individuals facing significant life challenges. Your role embodies the core values of integrity excellence and compassion supporting not just recovery-but long-term community integration and wellness.

Requirements for this Registered Peer Recovery Specialist job

To excel as a Peer Recovery Specialist II at Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board you will need a combination of specific skills and qualifications. First and foremost a valid Registered Peer Recovery Specialist certification with the VA Board of Counseling is essential along with the completion of the DBHDS 72-hour Peer Recovery Specialist Training. A minimum of one year of experience as a peer specialist is crucial for effectively assisting individuals facing mental health and substance use challenges.

Strong interpersonal skills are vital enabling you to build trusting relationships with clients. Additionally proficiency in outreach advocacy and daily living support activities is necessary for successfully guiding individuals through their recovery journey. A valid State Drivers License is required for transportation purposes ensuring you can reach clients in various settings.

Your ability to demonstrate empathy integrity and a commitment to promoting holistic recovery will be key to making a positive impact in the community.

Knowledge and skills required for the position are:

  • Registered Peer Recovery Specialist with the VA Board of Counseling (RPRS) which includes the completion of DBHDS 72 hour Peer Recovery Specialist Training
  • At least one year of Peer Recovery Specialist experience.
  • Valid State Drivers License
