Job Description

THE POSITION


This position provides electrical maintenance to the Citys Water/ Wastewater pumping stations reservoirs groundwater wells and treatment plants. The work involves the performance of skilled electrical tasks in accordance with standard trade practices in the installation alteration maintenance and repair of electrical/electronic systems and equipment including but not limited to 480 volt and 4160 volt motors variable frequency drives and soft starters.

IDEAL CANDIDATE STATEMENT

An ideal candidate will have experience in medium voltage equipment maintenance motor controls and troubleshooting skills. They will be able to work well with team members as well as independently as required. The candidate will have experience in reading and interpreting wiring diagrams/ladder diagram format single line drawings and electrical detail drawings. They will be familiar with lockout/tagout systems and have electrical safety work procedures training. Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) installation and maintenance experience is desirable.

DEFINITION

This is skilled journey-level work in the installation maintenance and repair of electrical/electronic systems and equipment in various municipal buildings parks stations plants street lighting and fire alarm systems. The work involves the performance of skilled tasks in accordance with standard trade practices in the installation alteration maintenance and repair of electrical/electronic systems and equipment. Assignments are made in the form of written or oral instructions and may be accompanied by sketches and/or blue prints. Work is ordinarily performed independently and subject to inspection in process or upon completion.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Installs conduits wire pull boxes switchboards and switches required in making additions extensions or alterations in electrical communication and data systems.
  • Repairs and maintains building interior and exterior lighting power heating fire alarm and street lighting systems.
  • Repairs and/or replaces defective parts in motors generators pumps storage batteries switchboards controllers contactors switches uninterruptible power supplies and other fixtures and appliances.
  • Tests locates and repairs trouble in electrical circuits and equipment including medium voltage distribution systems.
  • Repairs and replaces damaged electroliers fire alarm boxes and police telephone boxes; replaces defective underground cables on street lighting system.
  • Performs limited troubleshooting repair and modifications to PLC hardware and software.

  • Reviews project documents prior to construction and inspects the work of electrical contractors to ensure conformance with plans and specifications.
  • Other related duties may also be performed; not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual holding this classification.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • The standard practices materials tools and equipment of the electrical trade.
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Local and national electrical codes.
  • The installation operation and maintenance of electrical/electronic equipment apparatus and instruments.


Ability to:
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions and to read and interpret blueprints sketches and diagrams.
  • Read and write the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance.


Skill in:
  • Locating and adjusting defects in electrical systems and equipment.
  • The use and care of tools and equipment of the electrical trade.


Experience and Education:

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying.

A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be experience as a journey-level Electrician. Journey level is completion of a recognized apprenticeship and 8000 hours in the field.

PROOF OF EDUCATION

Should education be used to qualify for this position then proof of education such as but not limited to university/college transcripts and degrees should be submitted with your application and will be required at the time of appointment. Unofficial documents and/or copies are acceptable.

An applicant with a college degree obtained outside the United States must have education records evaluated by a credentials evaluation service. Evaluation of education records will be due at time of appointment.


SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Driver License:


Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License at the time of appointment. Loss of the Class C License is cause for discipline. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Residency Requirement:

Employees in this classification must reside within thirty-five (35) air miles from the freeway interchange at W-X Streets 29th-30th Streets within one year following appointment.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD:

Employees must complete twelve (12) months of probation at a satisfactory performance level prior to gaining permanent status.

THE SELECTION PROCEDURE

  • Applicants are responsible for attaching a copy of their DD214 to each position for which they apply.

2. Screening Committee: (Pass/Fail) Human Resources will evaluate employment applications for the minimum qualifications stated on the job announcement.

3. Screening For Most Qualified:(Pass/Fail) In the event of a large candidate pool each candidates Work Experience section of the application will be evaluated and rated. Only those candidates determined to be the most qualifiedwill proceed to the next step in the selection process. 4. Performance Test: (Weighted 100%) Qualified candidates will be notified by email of the test date time and location approximately one to two weeks prior to the test. The performance test will be job related and may include but not limited to the knowledge and abilities as outlined above. The performance exam will be administered in English only.

TEST EXEMPTION - If you have previously taken the Electrician exam within the past year of the final filing date of this postingyou may be considered exempt from taking the Electrician Exam.

The City of Sacramentos Human Resources Department will verify applicants eligibility at the time of the final filing deadline of this job posting.

5. Eligibility - Candidates who pass the performance test will be placed on an eligible list. The hiring department may contact those on the eligible list for an interview at any time during the life of the one-year list. Candidates eligibility expires year from the date of notification of a passing score for the Electrician examination. Candidates can take the examination at any time to maintain eligibility.

6. Conditional Hire: Upon receipt of a conditional offer the selected candidate must complete and pass Live Scan/fingerprinting. If applicable candidates may also need to pass a pre-employment medical exam controlled substance and/or alcohol test and possess any required licensure or certification prior to receiving a start date from the Department. Failure to meet these prerequisites will be grounds for withdrawal of your conditional offer of employment.
