General Responsibilities
Responsible for managing the Underwriting Department; developing implementing and deploying policy forms and rates to achieve corporate underwriting and profitability goals; developing implementing and achieving established goals and objectives; ensuring the departments compliance with various operating policies and procedures and various regulatory requirements; managing assigned personnel; communicating and interfacing with other management personnel; providing periodic management reports.
Essential Duties
- Manages the Underwriting Department as illustrated by the following:
- Develops and enhances underwriting philosophy standards and guidelines in accordance with corporate risk management objectives.
- Develops new forms and rates as needed to meet the underwriting and profitability goals of the corporation.
- Develops implements and monitors the corporations exposure management program including oversight of existing agency relationships and the development of new profitable growth strategies that are consistent with corporate philosophy.
- Maintains liaison with property inspection services companies.
- Assigns specific projects and programs on an as-needed basis.
- Develops implements and achieves established goals and objectives as follows:
- Organizes the department and allocates resources e.g. human financial etc. toward tasks required to achieve goals and objectives.
- Directs through appropriate personnel day-to-day activities in support of the objectives.
- Measures effectiveness and performance of the systems and people.
- Develops resources as appropriate to improve efficiency and productivity.
- Assists in the development of the annual budget and adheres to budget parameters.
- Abides by the current laws and organizational policies and procedures designed and implemented to promote an environment which is free of harassment and other forms of illegal discriminatory behavior in the work place.
- Cooperates with participates in and supports the adherence to all internal policies procedures and practices in support of risk management and overall safety and soundness as well as external regulations.
- Directly manages assigned personnel as follows:
- Assists in the selection of new personnel as appropriate.
- Makes provisions for the proper orientation and training of new personnel.
- Reviews employee performance throughout the probationary period and on a regularly scheduled basis thereafter.
- Organizes schedules and distributes work among assigned personnel; assigns related projects on an as needed basis.
- Keeps personnel informed of pertinent policies and procedures affecting the department and/or their jobs; creates an atmosphere in which upward communication from employees is encouraged.
- Administers personnel policies and procedures as established.
- Communicates and interfaces with other management and staff personnel in order to integrate objectives and activities.
- Provides periodic reports to the Chief Executive Officer and others as required throughout the organization.
Basic Qualifications

- Knowledge of standard underwriting and policy management procedures
- Knowledge of applicable Federal and State regulatory laws rules and regulations;
- valid drivers license.
Education/Training:
A BS or BA degree in a related field normally required; Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation preferred.
Experience:
- A minimum of ten (10) years experience in property and casualty insurance underwriting or related positions normally required.
