Course Number/Name: BSAD 217 - Introduction to Sport Management

Course Description:This course is designed to provide an overview of the sport industry. Students will learn about the fundamental components of sport organizations of various types within the interscholastic intercollegiate and professional sport levels. Other aspects of the sport industry addressed include facility and event management marketing communications and social and legal issues. Students will also learn about the current issues and trends impacting the operation of organizations and leagues throughout the industry. Offered Fall Spring.

Course Objectives:

To gain awareness of the sectors of the sport industry.

To understand the skills necessary to be successful in the sport industry.

To understand the intersection of components contributing to the operation of sport organizations.

To understand the factors contributing to the evolution of the sport industry.

Course Number/Name: BSAD 270 Sport & Media

Course Description:This course is designed to help students understand the core components of media in the sport industry. Focus is placed on the fundamental elements of media including the symbiotic relationship between sport organizations and media and the role and impact of media in sport. Students will examine the evolution of media from newspapers and radio to television to digital and social media. Focus will also be placed on public relations crisis management and current trends and issues within sport media. Offered Fall M6OL (odd).

Course Objectives:

To understand the fundamental principles of sport media.

To understand the history and evolution of sport media.

To evaluate sport organizations use of digital and social media.

To understand the symbiotic relationship between sport organizations and media.

Gain an understanding of the internal and external influences on sport media.

Course Number/Name: BSAD 316 Facilities & Event Management

Course Description:This course is designed to help students understand the core components of facilities and events. Focus is placed on the design location financing and use of facilities and the role they play in event experiences. Event-focused topics addressed include factors contributing to event experiences including the sensory experience rituals and role of the atmosphere as well as the marketing and service aspects of events. Crisis management and other event-related decision making will also be addressed. Prerequisites: BSAD 217 or 310 or consent of instructor. Offered Fall Spring M6OL (even).

To understand the factors that contribute to facility design.

To understand the components that contribute to event experiences.

To understand event management operations that contribute to event experiences.

Course Description:This course is designed to help students understand and examine the core components of sport governing bodies. The course will address the core components of governing body organizations including organizations mission and vision structure finances policies and strategy for success. Focus is placed on interscholastic intercollegiate and various types of professional sport organizations in the United States and abroad. Students will learn the fundamental elements of these governing bodies while also assessing these organizations decision making as they prepare for the future. Offered Fall.

To understand the fundamental components of governing bodies in sport.

To evaluate the factors contributing to the operation of sport governing bodies.

To evaluate factors contributing to the relationship between organizations in the sport industry.

To evaluate the role of trends and issues in the governance of sport leagues.

Course Description:This course is designed to help students understand and examine the field of sport communication. This course focuses on the various mediums of growth and evolution of mass media including newspaper radio television and social and digital media and the impact these mediums have on relevant stakeholders. Focus is also placed on types of communication including intrapersonal interpersonal and interorganizational and factors that influence effective communication. Students will also examine topics including public relations crisis communication and social issues present within sport communication. Offered Fall Spring (even).
