Science Service Sustainability

Purpose:
Under direct supervision theRegional Water Engineering Associate provides engineering expertise for the Bureau of Regional and Laboratory Services programs including but not limited to drinking water wastewater and stormwaterin the Aiken-Orangeburg office.

Responsibilities:
  • Reviews preliminary engineering reports engineering plans and specifications and other technical documents related to construction operation or maintenance of environmental projects to ensure compliance with regulations. Makes technical recommendations issues approvals to operate or takes other appropriate action based upon findings of review.
  • Conducts construction final and operation inspections of environmental facilities/systems with discretionary authority to take appropriate action based upon findings of inspections. Prepares necessary documentation of activities along with completing sanitary survey forms when required. Initiates enforcement action by submitting enforcement referrals to the program enforcement section after supervisors approval.
  • Responds to and investigates complaints received from the public. Takes appropriate immediate and follow up actions to facilitate satisfactory results.
  • Assists regulated community (engineers operators etc.) with advice regarding preparation and submission of engineering reports engineering plans and specifications monitoring reports and other environmentally related documents.
  • Process NOI for coverage under general stormwater construction permit.
  • Perform other duties as required which includes but is not limited to attending periodic staff meetings and training.



Minimum and Additional Requirements

A bachelors degree in engineering.

The education must qualify the applicant to become registered as a Professional Engineer in South Carolina and must meet one of the education requirements outlined on the South Carolina Department of Labor Licensing and Regulations website. If the applicant is utilizing the substantially equivalent education pathway the approval letter from LLR must be final at time of application.


Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Applicants indicating college credit or degree(s) on the application are encouraged to upload an unofficial copy of the transcript as an attachment to the application. If selected for an interview a copy of the college transcript will be required via email or at the time of the interview. Please note that some departments within the agencymayrequire an official certified copy of the transcript prior to hiring or within a specific timeframe required by that area after hiring. Failure to produce an official certified transcript may result in not being hired or termination.

Additional Requirements:
  • Able to provide outstanding customer service in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.

  • Work effectively in a team-oriented environment and encourage positive working relationships with coworkers industry and government officials.

  • Work independently in a field environment.

  • Ability to successfully complete prescribed technical coursework and pass any test relevant to the position within the probationary period or trial period.

  • Work in all reasonable weather conditions and access non-traditional work environments.

  • May require:

o Daily travel throughout the state.

o Occasional overnight travel.

o Participation on the Environmental Response Team and is subject to on call or call back 24/7.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with water and wastewater methods and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable state and federal water and wastewater laws and regulations.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Professional (Word Excel PowerPoint).
