POSITION SUMMARY: This is a 5-month Internship designed for medical students to gain hands on research experience in an academic research lab setting. The students will work closely with senior members in the lab and will learn several techniques that are applicable to the project they chose to work on.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
During the 5-month internship the intern will be assigned to work with a senior member of the Ksander laboratory. This senior lab member will supervise the student and be responsible for teaching all techniques required for the Uveal melanoma project they chose to work on.
Below is a list of some techniques the interns will learn but additional techniques may be added depending on the specific research project.
Staining to tissues sections from the eye lung and liver for tumor cell markers and markers specific for different pathways connected to tumor cell proliferation and dormancy. Using the confocal microscope to take images of the stained sections for quantification. Using a variety of in vivo imaging techniques to measure and quantitate tumor growth in the eye lung and liver. These will include the IVIS Heidelberg SLO and OCT. Detection of the tumor cells will be via fluorescence and/or luciferase. In vitro culture techniques to grow primary and metastatic uveal melanoma cells. Injection of tumor cells into the supra-choroidal space of the mouse eye.
At the completion of the internship the student intern will make a final presentation in lab meeting to describe the project they chose to work on the techniques they learned and the data analysis they completed. They will also participate in development of the data into graphs for presentation and publication. Written progress reports and a final report is required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Interns will be medical students. Outside laboratory experience is beneficial but not required. Interns must have excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work will primarily take place in a research laboratory and the Schepens animal facility.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possible lifting of 10 pounds depending on nature of chosen project(s).
