Job Title:Assistant Heavy Equipment Mechanic/Lube Technician

Reports to: Vice-President of Operations (Kingston)

Work Description


The Assistant Heavy Equipment Mechanic/Lube Technician is responsible for the timely delivery of mechanical maintenance on the equipment used for all Taggart Construction projects. Maintenance must be recorded and processed in a way that coincides with the shop practices and must be carried out in a manner that is compliance with the Health and Safety policy. The performance of the duties must ensure a quality approach to all employees customers subcontractors managers and suppliers. All responsibilities must be performed in a manner consistent with the Taggart vision mission and must comply with all company policies and procedures. The Assistant Heavy Equipment/Lube Technician in coordination with the Shop Forman is responsible for designing and carrying out policies and procedures that support the strategy and delivery of that particular job and all repair projects Taggart Construction is engaged in.


This is a full-time position..


Major Responsibilities:

Assistant Heavy Equipment Lube Technician


  • Assist in repair and maintenance of a variety of heavy duty equipment and vehicles.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on various types of equipment.
  • Lubricate moving parts with specified lubricants.
  • Drain oil from various compartments and refill with required amount of oil.
  • Driving to and from various job sites throughout the City to perform maintenance services.
  • All other duties as required by the Manager.


Statement of Qualifications:

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:


  • Minimum of two years of experience in a similar role.
  • Experience in heavy equipment maintenance including diesel mechanics preventative maintenance troubleshooting and general maintenance of heavy equipment.
  • Experience with equipment such asexcavators bulldozers off-road trucks and trucks is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of engine power train and hydraulic systems is an asset.
  • Ability to complete all required paperwork for MTO.
  • Must be able to perform visual inspections on machines and report conditions/deficiencies as per established processes (written and verbal).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Physical strength and stamina to lift heavy machinery (up to 60lbs on a regular basis) and work in cramped or awkward position.
  • Openness to learn new technologies and techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Must have the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • A valid Class D drivers license is required.
  • Journeyman certification as either a Truck or Coach Technician (310T) or Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanic (421A) is preferred.



Physical/Sensory Effort/Work Environment:

  • Sitting or standing for long periods of time at workstation.
  • Difficult weather conditions may require working outdoors and on site.
  • Working on hard floors and below heavy equipment.
  • Travel will be required to various sites through the City and possibly to Ottawa.
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity required.
  • Overtime as required.
