JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Maritime Science Instructor (MSI) for Coast Guard JROTC
JOB GOAL: The Maritime Science Instructor (MSI) for Coast Guard JROTC (CGJROTC) will serve as an instructional leader who teaches independently of but shares program responsibilities with the Senior Marine Science Instructor (SMSI). The MSI will instruct and supervise participating student cadets in the subject areas of leadership citizenship health and wellness maritime science Coast Guard missions / operations / history and related subjects. The MSI will serve as a high-impact role model to students instilling citizenship responsibility and a deep appreciation for the Coast Guard and our nation. The MSI will also figure as a prominent and influential leader who successfully facilitates positive relationships amongst the Coast Guard school and local
community.
REPORTS TO: Principal and Senior MSI
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Proficient in the use of standard computer applications.
- Excellent communication skills both oral and written.
- Ability to work collaboratively with the school administration staff and the services CGJROTC program leadership.
- Possess or have the ability to obtain a Commercial Drivers License.
- Experience in the Coast Guard training community either as a Coast Guard instructor instructional designer master training specialist training manager or training supervisor.
- Experience in non-profit leadership secondary education or leadership in youth-based programs.
EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- An educational minimum of an associate degree in any focus OR one must be obtained within five years of employment.
- Enlisted E-7 through E-9
- Coast Guard retirees: Active duty or reserve (within 1-year of retirement and up to 5-years after separation date)
- Active SELRES members (with a minimum of 4 years of service)
- Coast Guard Veterans (Separated with honorable discharge within the past 5- years with at least 8-years of service)
- Must be familiar and comfortable with various leadership teaching and learning styles across structured classroom lessons close-order drill USCG unit field trips and providing leadership guidance to students.
- Experience with formal classroom and information instruction.

- Must remain up-to-date with the current happenings of the USCG: operationally administratively and in recruiting.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSING
- Must obtain certification as a Coast Guard JROTC instructor.
- Individual states may require additional licensing/certification
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Instructs cadets in the CGJROTC curriculum during the school year; develops short- and long-range plans for achieving curriculum goals gathers appropriate materials establishes clear objectives for lessons and formulates appropriate lesson plans.
- Meets and instructs assigned classes at designated locations and times; maintains a safe and orderly learning environment.
- Recruits cadets into CGJROTC program and provides appropriate counseling to cadets; evaluates student progress and submits necessary government reports on a timely basis.
- Plans and implements instructional programs that adhere to system wide goals and priorities and meet the needs interests and abilities of students.
- Organizes supervises and participates in extracurricular activities for CGJROTC cadets to include color guard drill teams and other special activities.
- Maintains knowledge of current professional military standards including physical fitness requirements.
- Creates an instructional environment that is conducive to the intellectual physical social and emotional development of cadets.
- Communicates standards achievements and deficiencies to students and parents. Meets with students and parents.
- Maintains complete and accurate student academic attendance and disciplinary records; maintains CGJROTC student records as required by military service regulations and local policies; monitors and assesses students academic progress.
- Oversees the appropriate use and care of instructional materials uniforms facilities and equipment.
- Collaborates with school administrators other teachers paraeducators parents and community members in the education of students.
- Attends staff meetings; serves on various committees.
- Develops and maintains positive working relationships with the local Coast Guard recruiting office and Coast Guard Academy Admissions office.
- Other duties as assigned by the principal.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Instructors must have a physical and medical fitness level that permits them to participate fully in CGJROTC activities. This includes but is not limited to the ability to march for at least one hour the ability to lift up to 50 pounds the ability to move boxes of curricular materials and other equipment.
- Instructors must possess the stamina to lead physical readiness training for a minimum of 50 minutes and the ability to conduct full day training over the course of several days.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- As a uniformed representative of the USCG instructors must maintain a sharp professional appearance in uniform and personal grooming in accordance with USCG regulations.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Individual Contract; 10 months
SALARY: USCG Minimum Salary Range Determined Regionally
