Job Description

Position:

Extended Term Substitute Assistive Technology Technology

Available September 2025 through no later than November 2025

Office of Student Services

The Office of Student Services (OSS) is responsible for providing a variety of supports and services to students in Cambridge Public Schools (CPS). Our programs are dedicated to ensuring equitable access and success for students with disabilities and students who have advanced learning needs. The Office of Student Services is comprised of special education 504 services and the office of advanced learning.

The Role:

The Assistive Technology Specialist is responsible for evaluating the functional and academic assistive technology needs which includes augmentative alternative communication (AAC) needs for students and classrooms to ensure accessibility to the curriculum and the teaching and learning process. The Assistive Technology Specialist reports to the OSS Coordinator.

Major Areas of Responsibility:

  • Conduct assessment to determine individual Assistive Technology needs for students.
  • Coordinate with Speech Language Pathologists regarding student AAC needs and implementation of necessary equipment/software.
  • Develop written reports with recommendations as a part of the evaluation process.
  • Maintain principles and practices of Universal Design for Learning.

Primary Objectives:

  • Ensure access to the curriculum for students with disabilities.
  • Increase the understanding of Universal Design for Learning.
  • Improve the integration of technology into classrooms for students with varied learning needs.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Assessing student needs begins with consideration of the continuum of low mid and high technology supports using the SETT framework.
  • Create technology integration plans and evaluation protocols.
  • Attend IEP meetings to consult with the team regarding student needs.
  • Provide professional development consultation and support to teachers and families to ensure fidelity of use and implementation of assistive technology.
  • Assess student and district needs in relation to developing and managing budgets related to assistive technology purchases.
  • Maintain a collection of available AT resources.
  • Consult with teachers and other related service providers.
  • Consult with schools regarding computer based state and district assessments pertaining to functionality of devices and software.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Your Skill Set:

As the incoming ETS Assistive Technology Teacheryou will possess many though perhaps not all of the following characteristics and qualifications:

Broad knowledge of state and federal eligibility requirements. Specific knowledge of adaptive technology and augmentative communication. Broad knowledge of instructional technology. Specific knowledge of the IEP process. Specific knowledge of state and federal laws and guidelines for special education. Above average skills in collaboration and working in challenging situations. Excellent skills in oral and written communication. Requires travel in and around Massachusetts.

Education and Experience:

Bachelors degree in Special Education and/or other Related Services; Masters degree preferred. Three years experience as a Special Education teacher and/or Related Service provider preferred. Massachusetts Certification: Moderate/Severe Special Education Instructional Technology or Related Services preferred.
