Library Staff Assistants arean integral part of day-to-day operations of the library responsible for a variety of support and customer service activities. Evening and weekend hours are required. This is a part-time position that is generally scheduled 16-18 hours per week.

The Organization

The City of Paso Robles was incorporated in 1889 as a general law city and operates under the Council-Manager form of government. As of January 1 2025 the Citys population has grown to approximately 31061 reflecting consistent growth over recent years as more residents are drawn to the Citys high quality of life strong community identity and comprehensive municipal services.

The City is a full-service municipality meaning it provides a wide range of essential public services directly to its residents. These include police and fire protection emergency medical response water and wastewater utilities parks and recreation planning and development services public works and community enrichment programs. The City is committed to delivering responsive effective and efficient services that enhance the well-being of its residents and support a safe sustainable and vibrant community.

The governing body consists of a five-member City Council: the Mayor elected at large by the voters of the City; and four Councilmembers elected by district. Voters also elect one City Treasurer at-large. All six elected positions are non-partisan. The City Manager appointed by the City Council serves as the Chief Executive Officer and is authorized to appoint all non-elected employees with the exception of the City Attorney.

The City operates with a total annual budget of $145.7 million for fiscal year 2025-26 and employs 314.44 full-time equivalent positions across the departments of Administrative Services City Managers Office Community Development Community Services Fire and Emergency Services Police Public Works and Utilities.

The Community Services Department is comprised of the Parks and Trails Library Services Recreation Services and Homeless Services divisions with a total of 38.11 FTEs. The Library Services Division is comprised of a City Librarian Childrens Services Librarian Outreach Services Librarian Adult Services Librarian Technical Services Librarian Circulation and Volunteer Coordinator two Administrative Assistants and 11 part-time Staff Assistants.


Typical Duties

Incumbents perform support services duties in a variety of areas including but not limited to:

  • Organize and maintain resource materials and records prioritize work and handle a variety of activities simultaneously
  • Implement and prepare off-site community events including moving full carts of books setting up tables and shade tents
  • Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working/customer relationships
  • Compose correspondence reports forms etc. from brief instructions
  • Oversee groups of program and facility users
  • Maintain facilities and furniture settings in the library
  • Use initiative within established guidelines
Education and Experience
Equivalent to graduation from high school and either one year of related work experience in a library office or classroom setting or as an intern in an accredited college/university graduate school program.

English/Spanish bilingual and biliterate proficiency as well as strong customer service experience are both desirable.

Licenses and Certifications
Must possess a valid California Class C driver license and have a satisfactory driving record.

Physical Demands
Must possess sufficient strength to regularly lift and carry objects weighing up to 10 pounds frequently and up to 25 pounds occasionally; sufficient force to push or pull heavy carts for up to five minutes at a time; and bend and reach to retrieve items.

Other Requirements:
Work is primarily indoors with heating and cooling regulated in a general office environment. During some assignments such as outreach services employees may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions and extreme heat and cold.
