Job Description

Supervising Attorney

(Full-Time Exempt Position)

Inner City Law Center (ICLC) is a nonprofit law firm located in the Skid Row neighborhood of Los Angeles. We are looking for extraordinary people to help us end homelessness in Los Angeles. Founded on the fundamental principle that every person should always be treated with dignity and respect ICLC fights for justice for low-income tenants working-poor families people who are disabled or experiencing homelessness people living with HIV/AIDS and homeless veterans.

Position Description: Inner City Law Center seeks a full-time Supervising Attorney to join the Benefits Advocacy team. Working in partnership with homeless service providers the Supervising Attorney will provide holistic legal services to tackle income barriers to clients becoming and staying housed. In addition to representing clients and participating in community outreach events including legal clinics and developing relationships with service providers the Supervising Attorney will handle and supervise attorneys fellows interns and administrative staff. While the staff make-up may change over time the Supervising Attorney will be directly responsible for supervising four attorneys and four paralegals and will address novel issues in addition to the following:

Responsibilities:

  • Play a significant role in leading and supervising the team.
  • Perform management roles including organizing teams workflow and work schedules assigning work providing substantive supervision of legal work reviewing work product such as legal briefs legal forms and presentations managing aspects of grant funding providing professional development opportunities for staff and providing guidance and recommendations regarding hiring promotion evaluations and significant discipline decisions.
  • Carry a small caseload of 10-15 cases and be available to temporarily carry more cases in the event of understaffing. Cases may involve administrative hearings appellate work and/or vital document work.
  • Conduct legal research.
  • Bring critical expertise or experience and provide significant guidance and mentoring to staff across the organization.
  • Partner with other nonprofit organizations and government agencies informing them and our client communities about their legal rights and ICLC services.
  • Maintain accurate timely and complete case files and submit detailed monthly statistical reports to the appropriate ICLC administrator.
  • Work with appropriate government agencies to resolve client problems.
  • Partner with pro bono counsel to expand the volume of services that ICLC can provide.
  • Manage the Benefits Help question line for partner agencies.
  • Represent ICLC Benefits Advocacy Team at ICLC Management level meetings.
  • Lead contractual compliance and annual audit reporting for grant requirements.
  • Work in partnership with the Directing Attorney to plan and deliver Capacity Building.
  • Participate and support in designing Benefits team clinics.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Hiring Criteria: Commitment to ICLCs mission and values. A minimum of two years of housing public benefits or other relevant experience. Prior supervisory experience is a plus. Admitted to the California State Bar or in another state and eligible to practice as a Registered Legal Aid Attorney under Rule 9.45 of the California Rules of Court. Commitment to client-centered advocacy and ability to build trust and rapport with a wide range of clients and team members in a kind appropriate and effective manner. Ability to assume responsibility quickly and independently manage varied responsibilities. Strong interpersonal skills and able to cultivate relationships with partner organizations. Desire to mentor junior staff work as part of a team and collaborate with project staff and partners. Excellent problem solving time management and decision-making ability. Effective communication skills remaining responsive to team members in a fast-paced environment. Strong organizational and project management skills to seek input from multiple stakeholders and see multiple priorities through completion. Mission driven and dedicated to eradicating homelessness and dismantling the systems that contribute to it. Commitment to equity diversity and racial justice. Innovative and solution oriented. Strong research writing and analytical skills. Organized detail oriented and able to assume responsibility quickly and independently in a rapidly growing organization. Must have access to reliable transportation.

Compensation: Salary ranges from $91000 - $125000 annually and is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Excellent benefits.
