Job Description

We invite applications for the temporary position of:

  • 1.0 FTE District Inclusion Support Teacher - Gifted Talented and Unique Learners

Comox Valley Schools and the Inclusive Education department embrace diversity and are committed to the philosophy of Inclusion while recognizing the importance of individualized and personalized supports and services.

The District Inclusion Support Teacher - Supporting Gifted Talented and Unique Learners will work as a member of our Inclusion Support Team and will be responsible for creating a blended delivery model of pull-out and push-in supports to best support the needs of each student.

The District Inclusion Support Teacher - Supporting Gifted Talented and Unique Learners responsibilities include:

  • Providing support to students identified as gifted and talented through the district screening process;
  • In school support for students and teachers in the form of program planning consultation and team teaching focusing on appropriate strategies and interventions and provision of resource materials for learners who are gifted talented or demonstrating unique interests or learning needs.
  • Provide creative and differentiated academic instruction to meet the intellectual and developmental needs of students with diverse profiles including giftedness high-functioning autism learning disabilities and varied talents and interests.
  • Coordinate a series of outreach seminars field trips and/or other creative program opportunities as enrichment opportunities for students to explore an area of interest more deeply.

Create a variety of learning opportunities for students to:

  • learn collaboratively about a topic or area of curricular interest
  • develop higher level thinking and communication skills
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies including visual aids hands-on activities and technology to engage students in exploring their learning at a deeper level
  • Create and implement Competency-Based Individualized Education Plans (CB-IEPs) that include academic social-emotional and/or behavioural goals for students designated under the Ministry of Education and Child Care.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Degree in Special Education (i.e. post-secondary degree or diploma program with special education concentration).
  • Coursework specifically related to gifted education; nature of giftedness and needs of gifted students; autism and other neurodiversities including strategies for extending and adapting curriculum differentiated instruction and inclusive teaching practices.
  • Working knowledge supported by coursework and experience of the special needs arising from twice exceptional students

The preferred candidate will demonstrate:

  • 3-5 years related experience in a related education setting
  • Ability to design implement review and evaluate creative program alternatives to meet the diverse needs of neurodiverse learners.
  • Knowledge of elementary and middle school curriculum and the ability to support teachers on how to adapt and extend curriculum for their students.
  • Experience with educational software and technology to support student learning.
  • Ability to support and coach students during group activities and social interactions guiding them in building communication collaborative learning and relationship-building skills.
  • Knowledge and experience working with Autistic students.
  • Ability to help students recognize and manage emotional responses to stress frustration or anxiety in a safe and supportive environment
  • Collaboration with District Inclusion specialists School Based teams classroom teachers external agencies and parents/guardians to provide a holistic approach to student development.
  • Regularly communicate with parents/guardians to discuss progress challenges and strategies for supporting socialemotional development at home.
