EIPS is recruiting a full-time Baker/Culinary Assistant at Bev Facey Community High.
Bev Facey Community High serves approximately 1015 students in grades 10 to 12 with 53 teaching staff and 25 support staff. The school is located in Sherwood Park AB.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
This position is similar to Educational Assistants in many ways except they work in a highly specialized area to help teachers with many instructional and non-instructional tasks in the classroom and the kitchen. Bakers will:
- Demonstrate a range of baking skills to students as well as produce items for retail selling in the school and for campus catering.
- Beknowledgeable in the kitchen; able to work on the hot and cold side of the kitchen independently.
- Demonstrate advanced level cooking multi-tasking and demonstrating many techniques to students through hands on learning.
- Have the ability to work in a retail setting serving students/staff while working with cash/debt daily.
- Work independently with students or in the classroom with the teacher
- work with a particular special needs student or a group of students within a class
- work as part of a multidisciplinary team
- perform related duties in the kitchen
Bakers provide routine and repetitive instructional support. Under the direction of the teacher assists students in Career and Technology Studies in acquiring basic education skills necessary for advancement in the educational setting. To reach this objective the baker follows an individually prescribed learning program through team planning and working one-on-one with the student(s). This involves routine recording basic charting and logging of observations on data sheets. The baker would demonstrate techniques and support students with recipes and food production to contribute to the overall learning environment.
Instructional Support
- Assist students with baking products and procedures under the direction of the teacher. This would include the following:
- Delegate certain tasks to each student
- Help the student to choose the proper ingredients
- Supervise proper measuring techniques
- Assist students in reading recipes
- Assist students in converting from metric to imperial
- Demonstrate cake decorating and specialty pastries
- Supervise students under the direction of the teacher in the kitchen
- Assist teacher with the maintenance of a variety of student records e.g. marking of student work where such marking is of a routine and non-subjective nature
- Demonstrate appropriate and safe use of equipment to students and understand the use and function of equipment
- Monitor students while they are working on baking projects
Student Assistance and Personal Care
- Assist the student in developing social skills and modelling appropriate behaviour
- Encouraging students to do their best
- Help students maintain concentration to complete tasks at hand
Assist Teacher/Classroom Preparation
- Assist teacher in instructing students on how to operate cash register for lunch sales
- Demonstrate how to balance the float for the cash register
- Assist in the Supervision of the cafeteria during lunch hour
- Modify and prepare materials for special needs student
- Ensure equipment and facilities are kept in a clean safe and orderly manner
- Assist the teacher in the preparation and ordering of baking supplies
- Assist in preparing setting up and dismantling displays information areas and work areas
- Regular communication with the Culinary teacher about menu planning and supply orders. -understanding of the ordering and billing process for catering
Providing Non-instructional Services
- Prepare large amounts of squares or cakes for banquets
- Fill orders for specialty cakes (e.g. birthday or anniversary)
- Work some banquets when necessary
- Assist fellow workers in the kitchen to ensure the completion of jobs
- Organize and clean storeroom and fridge
- Check catering orders daily to ensure baking is ready when needed
- Do laundry throughout the day to ensure clean aprons and cloths
- Receiving storing and rotating food supplies ensuring food safety and proper stock management
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education
- High School Diploma
- Training in baking and cake decorating
- Journey person certification in culinary or baking an asset
Experience
- A minimum of one (1) year related experience is required.
Equivalencies will be considered.
