Job Description

Full-Time and Permanent; Exempt; 7.33 Hours/Day; 220 Days/Year; 11 Months/Year

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in art education
  • Eligible for or in possession of the appropriate teaching license from the Virginia Department of Education.
  • Tuberculin skin test certifying that the individual is free of contagious tuberculosis.
  • Must meet all pre-employment screenings.
  • Demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of the subject(s) to be taught.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the art content skills and processes.
  • Demonstrates considerable knowledge of the principles and methodologies of effective teaching.
  • Demonstrates considerable knowledge of developmental theories in relation to art and cognition.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of current assessment strategies.
  • Has the ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports.
  • Effectively interacts with pupils colleagues administrators and classified employees.
  • Knowledgeable in the use of personal computers.

Nature of Position

  • Responsible directly to the principal or designee.
  • Shapes and directs students activities so that they have opportunities to engage meaningfully in class.
  • Teaches knowledge and skills for art instruction and current curriculum in art media and processes including crafts drawing painting sculpture ceramics mixed media printmaking and computer graphics to students.
  • Uses works of art to teach art content including art history aesthetics criticism and visual culture.
  • Provides differentiated instruction based on the needs and interests of a diverse population with varying intellectual and artistic abilities.
  • Uses art vocabulary and has it visible in the room.
  • Organizes storage areas and controls use of materials equipment and tools to prevent loss or abuse to ensure safe use and to minimize time required for distribution and collection.
  • Establishes and maintains standards rules procedures and routines that govern student behavior support learning and ensure a safe learning environment.
  • Communicates with colleagues parents administrators and community members to explain art programs and goals.
  • Plans and prepares (or assists students in preparing) artwork for art displays and exhibitions designed to showcase students work for the school and community according to NPS guidelines.
  • Works within a supply budget. Maintains required financial records and uses appropriate procedures for spending funds.
  • Models and demonstrates techniques and skills in drawing painting and other art media.
  • Supervises students in- and out-of class activities during the assigned workday.
  • Above average amount of walking bending standing stooping and lifting in classrooms and/or art studios and/or while using an art cart and/or while displaying artwork.
  • Work involves exposure to normal everyday hazards. Teacher is responsible for prompting and monitoring safe practices in relation to the use of potentially hazardous art materials.
