Job Description

New York University (NYU) Florence is seeking a part-time lecturer for a course called Topics in Africana Studies: Race and Racialization in Italy. The course is offered by NYU Florence beginning Fall 2025 in conjunction with NYUs Department of Social and Cultural Analysis and the Gallatin School of Individualized Study.

The course is taught in English. The sessions are a mixture of lecture discussions and guest visits and excursions. The class meeting pattern for this 4 credit course will be discussed with qualified applicants during the interview process. There are 15 in-person instructional weeks. In addition to the time required for course preparation classroom instruction and assessment the instructor is required to hold a minimum of one set 60-minute office hour per instruction day during which the instructor will be available to meet with students.

The instructor role includes all preparation delivery and grading. Using Florence as a learning tool is an expectation for the course. The course is intellectually challenging in content and requires rigorous student assessment. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who share NYU Florences commitment to diversity equity and inclusion and who can contribute to the diversity of intellectual life at our site.

Course details

The course aims at introducing students into contemporary academic debates on race and racism in Italy. Issues of race ethnicity and belonging will be explored through different approaches. The course provides a historical introduction to race and racism in Italy. Emphasis will be placed on the dual inward/outward colonial drive which challenges the idea of a racially and culturally homogeneous Italy. As we move into contemporaneity bibliographical references will be integrated with different cultural productions such as documentaries and movies song lyrics and video poetry. The materials will constitute a peculiar archive on race and racialization in the country.

Experience teaching in the US is helpful.

Ideal candidates should be excellent teachers and accomplished professionals who can demonstrate an ability to connect theory and practice with young artists with a varying degree of experience with course themes and encourage student-led inquiry in the classroom.
