We are looking for a Senior Analyst (Investment) for the Market Intelligence team. The team sits within Energy Security Modelling and plays a pivotal role in ensuring the energy security of Great Britain through fundamental analysis covering GB power European power and global gas markets. We develop cutting-edge modelling to provide impactful insights and expert advice supporting critical decisions related to security of supply and future policy development. This is a technical specialist role to support our growing capabilities in market forecasting investment risk and supply side analysis.

In this senior analyst role you will be responsible for creating and maintaining financial models for a range of energy assets projects and technologies. Alongside other senior analysts you will be responsible for developing scenario analysis to highlight the sensitivity of project returns to modelling/market assumptions. You will use the insights gain from this robust financial modelling stakeholder engagement and research to provide decision-makers with actionable insights.

This role can be based fromWokingham Warwick or Glasgow and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants as well as flexible working arrangements.

About the National Energy System Operator (NESO)

In Autumn of 2024 the ESO transitioned to National Energy System Operator or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO) the new National Energy System Operator is the independent body responsible for planning Great Britains electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.

The ESO including all of its existing roles are now at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO we will build on our existing roles capabilities and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors including electricity natural gas and hydrogen and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.

The organisation is set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors with complete operational independence from government the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As was the ESO NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable affordable and secure way for all.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop and maintain financial models for a range of energy assets projects and technologies
  • Lead the development of scenario analysis to highlight the sensitivity of project returns to modelling/market assumptions.
  • Lead data management and assurance processes to ensure modelling remains accurate and robust identifying and obtaining new data where appropriate.
  • Produce analysis including clear visualisations of modelling results that quickly provide stakeholders with the key messages they need to act on methodology or policy decisions (e.g. the potential supply side impacts of changing market conditions)

  • Act as a key interface with internal and external stakeholders with regards to investment incentives ensuring proactive management of key stakeholders. Use insights gained from robust financial modelling stakeholder engagement and research to provide decision-makers with actionable insights on the implications of policy options.
  • Engage with teams across NESO to ensure timely delivery of insight that supports decision-making particularly on energy security of supply
  • Provide oversight challenge and advice to more junior team members and support them in delivering their accountabilities.
  • Alongside senior market intelligence analysts support development projects in market modelling and forecasting as determined through our annual prioritisation process.

About you

  • Experience in forecasting financial modelling energy market analysis or investment research with at least 3 years experience in relevant roles.
  • Up to date knowledge of electricity markets (GB and Europe) and gas markets (global) familiarity with market structures price drivers and the regulatory environment. Familiarity with energy market trends particularly those related to the energy transition.
  • Ability to communicate complex financial and technical concepts in writing and presentations to a wide range of audiences.
  • A strong of how different energy asset are valued and the revenue sources available for various assets/technologies and how returns vary with market conditions.
  • Knowledge of financial instruments used in energy and how they can be used to manage risk (preferable).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to develop and maintain effective stakeholder relationships.
  • Logical and creative approach to solving analytical problems collaborating across multiple teams where appropriate.

What youll get

A competitive salary between 64000 - 70000pa dependent on experience and capability.

As well as your base salary you will receive a bonus based on company performance 26 days annual leave as standard and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
