Surveillance Laboratory Coordinator Overview:
Under the supervision of the Mosquito Surveillance Supervisor the Mosquito Surveillance Laboratory Coordinator coordinates the daily operations of the surveillance laboratory to ensure timely and accurate diagnostic results. The Laboratory Coordinator is responsible for the majority of mosquito species identification sorting sexing and pooling in preparation of testing. In the absence of the Mosquito Surveillance Supervisor the Laboratory Coordinator will assists with the supervision of both full-time and part-time staff.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Conducts laboratory operations and provides guidance on activities including mosquito identification enumeration sample preparation sample handling and storage for pathogen testing.
  • Updates and maintains mosquito surveillance database daily including collection information trap sites users new trap sites and/or new species. Conducts QA/QC on database entries.
  • Conducts surveillance for mosquito-borne diseases and nuisance mosquito populations; sets and retrieve traps from various field habitats.
  • Ensures proper functioning of mosquito surveillance laboratory including upkeep and preventative maintenance of equipment and sufficient inventory.
  • Trains mosquito surveillance technicians and seasonal staff in mosquito identification and pooling techniques and proper use of lab equipment.
  • Conducts sites surveys identifies appropriate habitats and obtains permission for use as trapping sites from public and private parties.
  • Assist in procurement of surveillance supplies and secure external services for laboratory equipment.
  • Provide training to staff and other mosquito control entities in identification and other techniques.
  • Other duties as assigned including responding to an emergency event.

Requirements

Education:
Bachelors degree in Entomology Public Health or related science from an accredited college or university.

Experience:
Two (2) years of experience in mosquito surveillance or arthropod identification.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge and skills of basic mosquito identification.
Knowledge of mosquito surveillance and trapping techniques.
Knowledge of mosquito biology and mosquito-borne diseases.
Knowledge of laboratory equipment including microscopes freezers and chill tables.
Ability to read/comprehend maps and routing of drivers.
Ability to implement improve and learn new techniques pertinent to laboratory objectives.

General Information

Work Environment:
  • Typical: Laboratory office and Field settings.
  • Laboratory: Use of laboratory equipment including Ultra low freezers chill tables and microscopes.
  • Office: This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers phones photocopiers filing cabinets and fax machines.
  • Field: Requires driving a county vehicle to collect mosquito samples in a variety of public and private properties located in a variety of urban and natural environments.
Physical Demands:
  • Typical: Laboratory setting Persons in these positions frequently lift carry push and pull objects weighing up to 10 lbs.
  • They also occasionally move objects weighing up to 20 lbs. and sometimes but rarely up to 50 lbs.
  • Field: Must be able to lift 70 lbs. be in good physical health able to tolerate high heat and humidity for extended periods of time outdoors while working in a variety of urban and natural environments.
  • Requires lifting bending kneeling walking up steep inclines working near and around water residences wooded areas etc.

Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
