About the Opportunity
The Neurosurgery Associate Physician is a licensed physician employed by Nova Scotia Health to provide medical care under the supervision of a fully licensed physician. They will have clearly defined clinical duties within the Department of Surgery under Division of Neurosurgery in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. The Neurosurgery Associate Physician would primarily be responsible for direct patient care activities under the supervision of an attending Neurosurgeon. The overall supervision of the Neurosurgery Associate Physician will be directed by the Head of the Division of Neurosurgery or designate and indirectly to the Executive Medical Director Central Zone NSH.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Makes regular rounds with supervising staff fellows and residents on the wards the emergency department and in the ICU as required and participates in on-call responsibilities
- Works with attending staff nurses pharmacists dieticians social workers physiotherapists physician house staff and other members of the health care team in the development and delivery of the overall patient care
- Communicates with patients families referring and family physicians concerning patient management plans
Performs and documents admission history and physical examinations progress notes discharge summaries death certificates medication reconciliations etc - Manages the day-to-day care of patients including writing medical orders on charts and consultations of other services and responding to emergencies in hospital in consultation with attending staff
- If competent to do so the AP will conduct assessments of patients in the emergency room and in-house patient consultations to Neurosurgery. This includes the Neurosurgery assessment of the trauma patient
- Performs procedures within the scope of demonstrated competence including: the insertion of peripheral intravenous lines initiation of intravenous medication taking blood samples for diagnostic purposes or arterial blood gases insertion of Foley catheters insertion of naso-gastric tubes assessment of surgical wounds suturing of surgical wounds removal of sutures removal of surgical drains insertion/removal of central venous catheters. In any and all of the above the Assistant will not proceed until full training and competence has been established with sign off by the Division Head or designate.
- Assists in the operating room when on call or when no residents are available during the day. The associate physician will not be left alone in the operating room. The associate physician will not be responsible for intra-operative decision making. The associate physician may be trained in tasks such as skin/scalp stapling or suturing but again always under the guidance of the staff member
- Arranges consultations with other departments/services for patient care / investigation
- Follows through on investigations and arranges follow-up outpatient visits
- Participates in Continuing Professional Development (educational sessions tumor boards and rounds) of at least 50 hours per year.
- Interacts with and orientates clinical clerks and PGY1s new to the Neurosurgery Service

About You

- Must meet the requirements to obtain a Clinical Assistant License from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia ( Must have obtained (in writing) Review of Qualifications from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia prior to application deadline. - CMPA coverage required
- ACLS certification required
- Good command of written and spoken English
- Must be able to promote and maintain good interpersonal skills
- Completion of the equivalence of a rotating internship and postgraduate training and experience in Neurosurgery are consider assets
- Physical demand-Must be able to sit stand walk and perform duties as outlined above
- Mental and Visual demand High; must be able to deal with stressful situations
- Competencies in other languages an asset;French preferred

Hours
- Permanent full-time position 96 hrs bi-weekly
Compensation and Benefits
$52.69 - $67.12 Hourly
