DescriptionThe main purpose of this role is to provide a comprehensive video recovery and enhancement service to officers of the West Midlands Police. Principally this will involve the rapid examination of digital video devices to acquire video evidence allowing investigations to progress without unnecessary delay.
Key responsibilities
- To undertake the forensic recovery and analysis of Digital video media from crime scenes in support of investigating officers and staff.
- Liaise with Forensic Scene Investigators (FSIs) and Senior Investigating Officers (SIO) at crime scenes giving guidance to enable the recovery of CCTV imagery.
- Working closely with Police officers and investigation staff you will maximise the forensic potential of evidence acquired from a range of video devices; including digital CCTV recorders; Cloud Storage Devices Dashcams Camcorders Drones (UAV) and Internet of Things (IOT) devices.
- Provide technical advice to Police officers troubleshooting problems under pressure and providing advice on best practice.
- You will acquire process and analyse evidential video recordings from a range of digital recording devices that have been submitted to the Video Imaging Laboratory. This will involve the creation of video compilations for court presentation recovery of data from damaged systems as well as the examination and recovery of deleted footage from digital recording devices.
- Undertake video conversion work for the purpose of presenting evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and court.
- Give guidance and training to WMP staff on the use of video and CCTV hardware and software.
- Work within the departments Quality Management System (ISO 17025 / ISO 17020) and actively contribute in the continuous improvement of the system by engaging in audits competency tests Quality Control procedures as well as suggesting improvements that can be implemented within the system.
- Attend and give evidence in court as and when instructed.
- You will actively undertake research and development projects identifying new techniques and implementing them within the Laboratory keeping a breadth of the latest technological advances in imagery and the wider Digital forensic team.

- Proven experience in the use of computer software and hardware.
- Must have a Full UK Driving Licence.
Desirable
- Higher education degree or equivalent in an appropriate subject or experience of working within CCTV/video; (Digital and Analogue.)
- Detailed knowledge of fundamental technical engineering principles behind digital video recording as well as video enhancement techniques.
- Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of forensic video techniques and their application including the methods of acquisition/recovery conversion production still image production and modification.
- Be knowledgeable of the ISO 17025 standard and ACPO Principles and Digital Evidence.
- Working knowledge of the relevant legislation; RIPA; GDPR; Human Rights Act (HRA) and disclosure procedure.
- Networking experience.
- Basic understanding of CCTV installation techniques and associated electrical procedures.
- LEVA accredited status
- Understanding of computer coding
- Supervisory Responsibility
- Coach/mentor new members of staff and assist L and D with Level 2 training as an SME once fully competent.
Special Conditions
- Supervised by the Digital Forensics Team Leader but is expected to use own initiative and work unsupervised on late shift and weekends.
- The post holder will be required to drive force vehicles and so will need a full UK driving licence that covers driving of manual vehicles.
- Required to attend training courses as and when required within the development on the post holder and the Unit. This includes courses outside of the West Midlands at times.
- Expected to comply with Health and Safety at Work Act Fire Prevention Regulations and COSHH Regulations at all times.
- Appointment to this post is subject to specific medical clearance. Appointments and progression between salary grades will be subject to qualifications experience and performance.
Hours:The post holder will be required to work a shift pattern that incorporates working weekends bank holidays and from time to time outside of core shift hours.
Location: Ridgepoint House Birmingham.
Vetting: Successful applicants will be required to pass Recruitment Vetting and Counter Terrorism Clearancescrutiny prior to commencing their role this will include a full background & financial disclosure as part of the vetting process.
Medical: Appointment to this role will be dependent upon successfully medical checks which may include a drugs test and if required a fitness test.
