The Role
We are looking for a Maintenance & Relief Shift Operator (Third class) to support our Real Property Planning and Management Branch. The incumbent would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity Excellence Respect and Creativity.
Our first class heating plant operates with mainly a small team of Second Class Operating Engineers who are typically designated as either Shift Engineers or Maintenance Engineers. The Third Class Operating Engineer who is designated to perform the Maintenance Engineer role will work under the direction of the Assistant Chief Operating Engineer on an eight hour/day Monday to Friday work week and would be responsible for all maintenance related to the boiler room compressor plant gas turbine and steam distribution to the NRC Main campus located on Montreal Road.
The incumbent is also responsible for the water treatment of open and closed loops. The Maintenance & Relief Shift Operators are called upon to provide shift relief for the Shift Engineers as required sometimes on a last minute on call basis.
Steam production is provided by 4 boilers with an additional boost from the Heat Recovery Steam generator (HRSG) given the cogeneration aspect. The gas turbine generator forms the basis of the cogeneration having an electrical power output of 4.5 MW. This is a unique installation within a Federal Government facility setting.
When occasionally designated to the role of Shift Engineer an employee operates on a rotational 12 hours shift basis (24 hours/day 7 days/week) 365 days a year.
Shift Engineers are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the NRC Montreal Road Campus Heating/Co-Generation Plant. He/she provides monitoring and emergency maintenance response for all Montreal Road Campus buildings and monitors equipment and systems for other NRC buildings in the National Capital Region during quiet hours.

Screening Criteria
Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:
Education
Secondary School Diploma according to provincial standards.
Must have a valid Third Class Operating Engineer Certificate issued by TSSA:
- Candidates from the province of Quebec with a MMF-C3 (Stationary Enginemen) Certificate and a MMF-CB (Refrigeration) Certificate must be able to meet the criteria set by TSSA and pass the exam on the TSSA Act and Ontario Regulation (219/01) within 60 days of receiving of an offer of employment and prior to being appointed to the position.
- Candidates who hold a Third Class Power Engineer Certificate in any other province must be able to meet the criteria set by TSSA and pass the exam on the TSSA Act and Ontario Regulation (219/01) within 60 days of receiving of an offer of employment and prior to being appointed to the position.

Experience
- Basic experience working in a complex high-pressure steam plant.
- Basic experience performing necessary maintenance and tests keeping records and responding to power or equipment failures.
- Experience operating in a first-class plant would be considered an asset.
- Experience with gas turbine co-generation would be considered an asset.

- Must be able to possess and retain the physical capabilities to perform the position which include but may not be limited to: crouching bending twisting walking climbing stairs & ladders ability to hear to diagnose mechanical troubles and the ability to handle heavy and bulky objects.

- Basic knowledge of operating and maintenance procedures related to the operation of a high-pressure steam and co-generation (gas turbine) plant and its distribution systems.
- Basic knowledge of electrical generation.
- Solid knowledge of boiler water treatment and cooling tower water treatment applicable to the occupation.

Compensation
From $76693 to $80494 per annum.
