As an Appellate Judge you will play a crucial role in ensuring that our judicial system operates effectively and efficiently.

Job Responsibilities:

As an Appellate Judge you will be responsible for reviewing appeals from lower court decisions and determining whether they were correctly decided. You will carefully evaluate the legal arguments presented by both parties and apply relevant case law and statutes to reach a fair and just decision. In addition you will be expected to write clear and well-reasoned opinions that explain your reasoning and provide guidance to lower courts.

Other responsibilities of the Appellate Judge may include:

  • Attending oral arguments and asking questions to clarify legal issues
  • Discussing cases with other judges to reach a consensus decision
  • Participating in judicial conferences and continuing education programs
  • Providing guidance and mentorship to junior judges and legal staff
  • Conducting research on legal issues and staying informed of developments in case law
  • Participating in community outreach and education programs to promote understanding of the legal system

Qualifications:

Qualified candidates for the position of Appellate Judge should possess the following qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school
  • Admission to practice law in the State of South Dakota
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience practicing law with a focus on appellate litigation
  • Demonstrated knowledge of tribal law and legal principles
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other judges and legal staff
  • High ethical standards and a commitment to upholding the rule of law
