Mississippi Votes is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization of intergenerational synergy centering and led by young people invested in the progression of Mississippi. We do this through our programming and outreach strategy that empowers young people encourages civic engagement and educates communities on voting rights through place-based grassroots organizing. Our vision is to cultivate a transformative culture of civic engagement throughout the state of Mississippi.
Overview:
MS Votes is looking for a self-motivated skilled and talented Public Relations Coordinator to join our developing communications department. The Public Relations Coordinator will be in charge of producing high-quality written content that engages Mississippians statewide and builds brand recognition and trust. The Public Relations Coordinators main duties will include creating informative content press releases articles and media opportunities to share our organizations mission vision values and work.
The Public Relations Coordinator works collaboratively with the entire Communications Team to curate meaningful and relatable messaging for the organizations internal and external use.
Responsibilities:
Organizational Communications:
- Execute MS Votes Communications strategy in support of our mission vision values and culture.
- Ensure consistency of message look and feel of all communications.
- Listen to develop and tell authentic and compelling stories of the young people who call Mississippi home.
- Create communications assets and tools (press releases social media toolkits etc).
- Write communications plans for policy campaigns internal projects and content launches.
- Participate in coalition and colleague messaging research develop MS Votes messages and share learning with staff.
- Lead donor communications including email drafting scheduling and outreach to individual and organizational donors.
- Triage and facilitate MS Votes crisis communications procedures.
- Collaborate with artists to embed culture and creativity into communications.
- Update and expand whats available on our website and on digital channels with guidance from and in partnership with the Leadership Team.
- Support and coordinate all MS Votes Departments communication efforts.
- Support external and internal production of visual assets including videos and graphics.
- Support digital marketing strategies including social media and advertising.
Press:
- Develop and execute an earned media strategy.
- Build and maintain relationships with local statewide and national reporters with special emphasis on POC-owned outlets.
- Pitch MS Votes stories to TV radio print and digital outlets.
- Develop written materials including press releases op-eds letters to the editor speeches one-pagers and reports.
- Ideate and develop strategic communications tools including talking points messaging maps background information to prepare staff for media interviews.
- Monitor and evaluate MS Votes press coverage and messaging quality.
- Provide support to staff & members in crafting their story op-eds statements and social media content.
Qualifications & Experience
Were looking for candidates with particular strengths in the following areas:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Familiarity working with the local statewide or national press.
- Ability to generate new high quality content on a short timeline with a strong personal voice as a writer and ability to speak with our organizations voice.
- Ability to maintain focus while juggling multiple deadlines.
- Critical thinker with the ability to work strategically.
- Energetic enthusiastic and able to occasionally work irregular hours and travel.
- Ability to speak write and/or translate English to Spanish and vice versa preferred.
Were looking for candidates with press and strategic communications experience including:
- Three or more years of work experience and/or ability to demonstrate mid-level expertise in press or strategic communications.
- Experience organizing colleagues organizations and/or movements while centering racial justice and equity.
- Experience managing staff and collaborating in a team environment.
- Experience using project management tools including: Zoom Asana Slack Everyaction Agorapulse and Statalytics.
Position Details:
- Compensation: $50000 annually
- Monthly allowance: $150/monthly auto and cell
- MS Votes offers a competitive benefits package covering 50% of employee medical dental and vision insurance premiums and 100% of mental healthcare costs.
- Position is based in Jackson MS
- Moving stipend is offered to employees expected to move to Jackson MS for this position.
- Evenings and weekend hours will be necessary
- Travel Required
- Up to 25% travel required
- Car and drivers license required for in-state travel

Base salaries at MS Votes begin at $50000 and could increase with experience. Mississippi Votes offers a full healthcare benefits package including medical vision dental and mental healthcare.
