Job Description

Job Summary

The lead sterile processing/surgical technologist is a senior-level professional responsible for overseeing the sterilization preparation and distribution of surgical instruments and equipment as well as scrubbing and assisting in surgical procedures when needed. They manage a team of sterile processing technicians and surgical technologists ensuring compliance with safety infection control and regulatory standards. This role combines leadership technical expertise and hands-on duties in maintaining the efficiency and safety of surgical and sterile processing operations.

Frye Regional Medical Center located in the beautiful foothills of North Carolina is a 355-bed acute care hospital 81-bed Behavioral Health facility and more than 70 primary and specialty care providers.

Essential Functions

Leadership and Supervision

  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of sterile processing.
  • Train and mentor staff in sterilization techniques surgical protocols and safety standards.
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures and quality control measures.
  • Schedule team members and manage workflow to ensure efficient operations.
  • Collaborates with nursing leadership and OR teams to create team environment and ensure daily needs are met.
  • Makes recommendations and communicates with nursing leadership and materials management teams to ensure surgical instrumentation and associated supply needs are ordered appropriately and managed in a cost-effective manner.

Sterile Processing and Equipment Management

  • Oversee the decontamination sterilization and assembly of surgical instruments.
  • Inspect instruments for damage and ensure proper functioning.
  • Maintain accurate records of sterilization cycles inventory and equipment maintenance.
  • Ensure adherence to infection control and regulatory standards (e.g. AAMI OSHA).Surgical Scrub/Scrub Assistant (if applicable): Frye Surgery Center- Tate Requirement
  • Prepare operating rooms by setting up surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Assist surgeons and nurses during procedures by passing instruments and maintaining a sterile environment.
  • Function in the full capacity of a surgical technologist in a scrub role or scrub assistant role.
  • Handle surgical specimens and ensure proper documentation.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • In-depth knowledge of sterilization processes surgical equipment and medical terminology.
  • Leadership and team management skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety and quality assurance. Ability to troubleshoot equipment and process issues efficiently.

Minimum Education

High School diploma or equivalent required

Required Skills

Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) required.

Additional leadership training skillset or supervisory experience preferred.
