Job Description

The University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown (located at 500 E. Market Street Iowa City IA) is seeking a full-time Safety and Security Manager.

This position oversees and maintains all operational aspects of the Safety and Security at UI Health Care Medical Center Downtown (MCD) campus. This includes planning developing implementing and evaluating hospital-wide programs that ensure the environmental safety and security of patients visitors staff and others present at this location. The MCD Safety & Security manager will serve as a leader in a matrixed healthcare reporting structure that reports to the MCD Chief Administrative Officer but will also work closely with the Medical Center Universitys Director of Safety & Security to align and standardize where applicable.


University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown (located at 500 E. Market Street Iowa City IA) is a 194-bed hospital that became part of Iowas only comprehensive academic health system on Jan. 31 2024.


Position Responsibilities Administration and Operational Management

Assist in all operational aspects of equipping teams with the tools they need to make every day a safe day. Coordinate efforts to communicate information in a timely manner to all areas and shifts within the department.

Coordinate safety and security process improvement activities by analyzing data trends and regulations while promoting teamwork within the department and other units within the hospital.

Develop plans to meet compliance goals patient/customer satisfaction expectations and quality of services provided.

Collaborate with leaders and administrators across functions levels and departments of MCD UI Health Care and the broader University of Iowa campus. Develop improved and new strategies to resolve issues improve consistency and streamline processes for better patient and staff experience.

Develop and/or implement programs policies practices for different areas within the department. Improve consistency and streamline processes across all areas of the department for better patient and staff experience. Coordinate efforts to develop and revise department and hospital-wide policies and programs designed to assist in attaining a safe and secure environment for patients visitors and staff.

Plans and organizes objectives and long-range safety and security programs for MCD in coordination with UI Health Care analyzing data to determine strategies to enhance the overall level of security based on best practices.

Leads MCD Safety and Security team in responding to emergencies.

Leads Safety & Security to ensure regulatory compliance including but not limited to TJC CMS DIAL OSHA etc.

Serve on various work groups and meetings concerning hospital-wide policies problem solving etc. especially as they relate to security and safety.

Responsible for access control key management and camera surveillance operations and policies and procedures that are in line with UI Health Care.


Strategic Initiatives

Prepare an annual report summarizing the scope of service provided by the Safety and Security department.

Promote teamwork within the department to provide guidance on implementation of policies procedures protocols and resources to equip teams with the tools and information to make every day successful.

Oversee MCD security programs with the implementation of new security systems and procedures.


Human Resources & Financial Management

Responsible for hiring new employees developing and managing the performance of staff and assuring staff is compliant with UI policies and procedures. Develop and implement policies and practices of a culture that supports staff excellence in the workplace.

Review applicants with Human Resources for Safety and Security Department positions and select best candidates and participate in onboarding and training.

Assist in the development and review of the departmental budget and finances.


Occupational and Environmental Safety

Leads Workplace Violence committee at MCD to promote an environment that supports a safe workplace and helps to train staff and provide protective measures in order to minimize violence.

Assist with creating implementing and maintaining safety management systems that involve workplace assessments reporting documentation and communications.

Ensures safety training programs comply with applicable regulations.

Assist in the oversight on safety programs compliance issues and regulation interpretation and hazard control in departments and operations.

Required Qualifications

Bachelors degree in criminal justice security administration or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

3 years of relative leadership experience.

A working understanding of Safety Standards

1-3 years of experience in public speaking and/or training development and delivery

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

-Possession of appropriate drivers license and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety Standards.


Desired Qualifications

Masters degree in a related field

Reasonable experience (1-3 years) in process improvement

Experience in workplace safety/security

A safety/security professional certification

Experienced in TJC and OSHA surveys

Law enforcement experience

Knowledge in access control video surveillance operations centers incident management

International Association for Healthcare security and Safety Supervisor certification

Possession of any National Incident Management System (NIMS) certificates such as IS-100 IS-200 IS-700a or IS-800. B.
