The Staff Development Nurse (SDN) is a dynamic leader who oversees and facilitates educational initiatives across the hospital system. This role is responsible for leading monthly SDN meetings coordinating with HR to organize General Hospital Orientation and ensuring that all nurse onboarding and education including computer-based training Cerner training and Learning Center activities are completed seamlessly for both Methodist Hospital (MH) and Methodist Womens Hospital (MWH). The SDN also ensures that competency tools are consistently updated and maintained. They coordinate the annual Skills Summit and collaborate on system-level clinical competencies with NMHS affiliates. The SDN leads education efforts for new equipment and policy or process changes serves as the Facility Administrator for Elsevier Clinical Skills and participates in various councils and committees as both an SDN and nursing leadership representative. Direct reports include the SDN for NAs and two Night Shift SDNs.
Additionally this role coordinates the Nurse Residency Program across MH and MWH organizing a 10-month rolling cohort that includes graduation mentoring Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) projects coordinating speakers and working with the Magnet Director on data collection and CCNE accreditation documentation.
Responsibilities:
Essential Functions
1. Provides guidance indefining and integrating theory research critical thinking and Best Care practice models throughout the continuum of care. (Consultation and Resources Professional Model of Care Nurses as Teachers)
- Mentors staff in developing reviewing and individualizing the plan of care to address the patients nursing care needs for optimum patient care outcomes.
- Facilitates use of evidence-based practice in patient care and delivery of care.
- Promotes critical thinking and research to enhance professional daily practice.
- Participates in continuing education and remains current on issues related to process.
2. Establish an ongoing learning assessment process in conjunction with the management team to identify and plan appropriate staff development programs. (Quality Improvement Professional Development Autonomy)
- Collaborates with Staff Development Nurses Clinical Nurses and/or Service Leaders to conduct an annual educational needs assessment and analysis of performance improvement data.
- Assists in the development of action plans to improve the quality of care.
- Coordinates and provides education to staff for specific learning needs to enhance competency in a cost-effective manner.
3. Serves as a role model for staff through expert knowledge and application of nursing process prioritization of patient problems and critical thinking skills. (Quality of Care Image of Nursing Autonomy)
- Acts as a change agent to improve outcomes and promote professional growth by facilitating/coordinating the initiation of adoption of and adaptation to change.
- Assess daily routines of staff to promote patient safety and enhance efficiency of completing job requirements.
- Assists staff in identifying processes that promote high quality cost-effective patient care.
4. Orientation of new staff to organization.
- Coordinates orientation process in partnership with Staff DevelopmentNurses Learning Center Preceptors and Service Leaders.
- Partner with Staff Development Nurses Clinical Experts Learning Center and/or Service Leaders to facilitate competency development in critical thinking communication and technical skills.
- Assists new employees in skill building.
- Facilitates competency development of nurses transitioning to a staff development role.
5. Demonstrates ability to individualize patient care in the age-specific population being served.
- Demonstrate ability to identify opportunities for and give individual customer service/patient care according to customer/patient needs.

Education
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
- Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN); education focus preferred.
- Successful completion of education and competency requirements.
Experience
- 3-5 years bedside clinical experience required.
- Prior experience in clinical education preferred.
License/Certifications
- Current valid Nebraska RN License valid compact multistate license or a temporary permit while awaiting licensure required.
- Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred at time of hire required within 3 months of hire.
- Certification(s) in areas of specialty preferred.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
- Knowledge of databases preferred.
- Computer knowledge with abilities in word processing required.
- Strong interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate and interact with patients family members hospital personnel and co-workers.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize work assignments.
- Ability to learn retain and utilize computer skills that are required for department and hospital or clinic information system.
