Duties and Responsibilities

1.*Primary point of contact and liaison between the Maunakea Observatories educational organizations and other internship partners. The program will include internships for high school students community college students seeking a professional certificate or an associate degree and undergraduate students.

2.*Responsible for developing coordinating and overseeing the internship program in collaboration with various educational institutions and the Maunakea Observatories. The role involves fostering partnerships with educational institutions and other organizations managing the internship application process and ensuring a positive and educational experience for interns.

3.*Develop and implement a Hawaii Island internship program for STEM and other disciplines in collaboration with the Maunakea Observatories.

4.*Build a network with the community to see what internships exist in various organizations and determine how to partner with them.

5.*Establish and maintain relationships with educational institutions Hawaii State agencies and other organizations to promote internship programs within the Hawaii Island community.

6.*Lead all aspects of the internship recruitment process including screening enrollment orientation and other forms of support necessary to prepare students and mentors to participate in the Internship Program.

7.*Align students with internships that match curriculum at community colleges and other educational spaces (e.g. mechanical technicians accounting graphic design communications etc.).

8.*Provide active leadership in the Internship Program through supervision and reviews consultation training and support in accordance with organizational values and guidelines.

9.*Actively manage interns performance goals and professional development.

10.*Coordinate the onboarding process for selected items including orientation sessions and necessary paperwork.

11.Provide information on workplace policies safety protocols and expectations.

12.*Serve as the main point of contact for interns during their placement.

13.*Monitor intern progress provide feedback and address challenges or concerns.

14.Organize professional development opportunities and networking events for interns.

15.Collect feedback from interns supervisors and partners to assess program value and effectiveness.

16.*Prepare regular reports on internship program outcomes and make recommendations for improvements.

17.Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

1.Possession of a baccalaureate degree in physical or natural sciences engineering education or related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities STEM education initiatives workforce development and internship program management; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education knowledge skills and abilities as indicated.

2.Considerable working knowledge of principles practices and techniques in the area of STEM education initiatives workforce development and internship program management as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts principles and methodologies.

3.Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws rules regulations and theories and systems associated with STEM education initiatives workforce development and internship program management.

4.Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective innovative and timely manner.

5.Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.

6.Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations groups team leaders and members and individuals.

7.Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.

8.If applicable for supervisory work demonstrated ability to lead subordinates manage work priorities and projects and manage employee relations.

9.Willingness & ability to work evenings and weekends.

10.Willingness & ability to travel independently and in a timely manner to various geographical locations on all islands. Requirement may be fulfilled by a valid Hawaii Drivers license (Class 3) comparable drivers license or other means of transportation which meets position needs.

11.Ability to work directly with scientists and administrators.

12.Possession of basic website and social media skills.

13.Strong community and interpersonal skills.

14.Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with educational institutions and organizations.


Desirable Qualifications

1.Masters degree in physical or natural sciences engineering education or related field.

2.Knowledge of astronomy or other STEM-related fields.

3.Familiarity with Maunakea Observatories and their research and operations.
