Job Description

REPORTS TO: Director of Physical Education

POSITION OVERVIEW:


The Aquatics Manager resides in the Office of Health & Wellness within the division of Academics of the Boston Public Schools reporting to the Director of Physical Education. The Office of Health and Wellness (OHW) is comprised of the following programs: Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Instruction Health Education Physical Education Physical Activity and Wellness Policy Evaluation & Promotions. OHW works across departments to provide an array of interdisciplinary services and supports to Boston Public Schools including: professional development tiered instructional coaching assessment & data management program evaluation support resource development and selection. Target areas include technical assistance/implementation marketing & communications family engagement and community partnership brokering & development.

The Aquatics Manager is responsible for overseeing the development implementation and evaluation of the districts aquatics programs with a particular focus on program and course development for swim education. In addition this position will manage the professional development and certifications of swim teachers swim paras and lifeguards to ensure high-quality instruction and student engagement in aquatic activities. The role combines program development on-site coaching and support and program administration to promote safe effective and inclusive swim education across the district. This position offers a dynamic opportunity for an individual passionate about aquatics education. The Aquatics Manager will have the opportunity to shape the future of swim instruction in the district.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program and Course Development:

  • Support schools in implementing the American Red Cross Learn to swim program for grades PK-12 physical education programs.
  • Ensure that the swim curriculum includes fundamental swimming skills water safety and advanced aquatic techniques catering to diverse student needs and skill levels.
  • Collaborate with the district Physical Education team swim instructors and community partners to ensure the curriculum is comprehensive inclusive and meets state or national standards as well as best practices in the field.
  • Regularly assess and revise the curriculum to incorporate new trends techniques and best practices in aquatics education.

Professional Development:

  • Work with the Physical Education Director to develop and implement a comprehensive professional development plan for swim instructors swim paras and lifeguards focused on effective swim teaching methods safety protocols and student engagement.
  • Facilitate training sessions and professional learning communities for new and current swim teachers and staff including strategies for accommodating students with special needs and diverse abilities.
  • Observe school-based swim programs in action offer feedback and support their growth as educators through individualized coaching and group training sessions.
  • Stay current on certifications safety regulations and aquatic teaching practices ensuring all instructors are properly trained and maintain appropriate credentials.

Program Oversight and Support:

  • Manage the implementation and coordination of aquatics programs across the district including swim classes water safety programs and extracurricular aquatic activities.
  • Monitor program effectiveness through feedback student assessments and evaluation of outcomes; make adjustments as necessary to enhance program quality.
  • Management and oversight of all BPS lifeguards.
  • Collaborate with the Physical Education Director and School Leaders to ensure appropriate scheduling and resourcing for swim instruction including scheduling and placement of lifeguards.
  • Maintain safety and risk management protocols for all aquatic programs ensuring that swimming activities comply with district and state safety regulations.
  • Monitor certifications needed for all aquatics staff.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Work with parents students and community organizations to promote aquatics programs and encourage broader participation in swimming activities.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school district and local aquatics organizations such as swim teams or aquatic clubs to foster community involvement and create enrichment opportunities for students.
  • Communicate regularly with district leadership to report on program progress successes and areas for improvement.

Administration and Reporting:

  • Support the Physical Education Director with budgets resources and equipment needed for aquatics programs ensuring adequate materials are available for instructional use.
  • Provide data-driven reports on program effectiveness student achievement and teacher performance to district leadership.
  • Support schools in achieving compliance with all local state and federal regulations regarding aquatic activities and physical education.
  • Collaborate with BPS Facilities to ensure lifeguards are completing operational tasks and maintaining records.

QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED:

  • Bachelors degree in Physical Education Recreation Sports Management Kinesiology or a related field (Masters degree preferred).
  • Current certification in water safety instruction and lifeguard training. The lifeguard certification includes Lifeguard Skills First Aid and CPR/AED. These certifications must be renewed every two years.
  • Minimum of 5 years of combined experience working in an aquatics environment with at least 3 of those years spent in aquatics program development and/or management.
  • Proven experience in providing professional development or coaching for physical education or swim instructors.
  • Strong knowledge of best practices in aquatic education swim instruction and water safety.
  • Ability to build relationships with a diverse group of students staff and stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple programs and initiatives simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate and inspire staff.
  • Knowledge of state and national educational standards for physical education and aquatics.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States
  • An understanding of and commitment to gain greater understanding of what is necessary for an urban school system to enjoy continuous improvement in an increasingly complex and competitive environment.
  • A deeply held and unyielding belief in the overarching mission of public education.

QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED:

  • Masters degree in a related field
