Job Description

Position Title: Network Technician

Department: Technology

Reports To: Director of Network Operations

FLSA Status: Exempt

SUMMARY:

Under general supervision the Network Technician plays a crucial role in the installation maintenance and troubleshooting of the district-wide network infrastructure. This includes wired and wireless networks network hardware cabling VoIP systems and related software. The Network Technician provides essential technical support for network connectivity and performance assists with server and switch maintenance ensures system integrity and contributes to the overall stability and efficiency of the districts technology services. This role supports Network and System Administrators and collaborates with other technology staff to provide a reliable technology environment for all users.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Network Implementation & Maintenance:

  • Install configure and maintain network hardware including routers switches firewalls wireless access points UPS devices and associated peripherals across all district sites.
  • Install terminate test and troubleshoot network cabling infrastructure (e.g. Ethernet fiber optic) according to industry standards and district guidelines.
  • Assist with the maintenance of network servers including hardware checks component replacement and basic software configuration under the guidance of administrators.
  • Perform routine maintenance firmware updates and patch management for network devices to ensure optimal performance and security.
  • Install configure and support VoIP phones and related systems troubleshooting call quality and connectivity issues.

Troubleshooting & Support:

  • Provide timely and effective technical support to end-users Technology Specialists and Computer Technicians for network connectivity issues including diagnosing problems with networked printers computers and other devices.
  • Troubleshoot network performance issues using diagnostic tools (e.g. ping traceroute cable testers network analyzers) and escalate complex problems to senior staff as appropriate.
  • Respond to network outages and service disruptions working to restore connectivity efficiently.
  • Follow established procedures for logging tracking and resolving hardware and software problems using a helpdesk or ticketing system.

System Integrity & Documentation:

  • Perform system integrity checks and assist in maintaining protection against network threats including computer viruses under the direction of security personnel.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed documentation of network configurations cabling layouts IP addressing schemes inventory and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of district databases related to technology assets service agreements and work orders.

Collaboration & Professional Development:

  • Collaborate with Network Administrators System Administrators and other technology staff on projects installations and system upgrades.
  • Support the Lead Technology Specialist and senior administrators with assigned tasks related to network hardware software and infrastructure projects.
  • Continuously develop and maintain proficiency with current and emerging network technologies hardware software and telecommunications solutions through self-study professional development and training.
  • Advise on and provide technical input for identifying acquiring and implementing future technology purchases and uses.

Specialized Support:

  • Install configure and troubleshoot interactive panels/boards projectors and related A/V equipment assisting with their network integration.
  • Install and support electrical components related to technology installations including power distribution AC/DC power considerations and appropriate cabling for IT equipment adhering to safety standards.

General Responsibilities:

  • Communicate effectively with school and district personnel regarding technical issues solutions and project status.
  • Attend and conduct training sessions as required.
  • Maintain detailed records of work performed and issues resolved.
  • May be required to drive a company or personal vehicle to perform job duties at various district locations.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Associates degree or vocational training in Networking Information Technology Computer Science or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of hands-on experience in network support including installation maintenance and troubleshooting of network hardware (routers switches WAPs) cabling and TCP/IP protocols.
  • Experience in a K-12 school district or similar public sector environment is a plus.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of network operating systems network monitoring tools and diagnostic utilities.
  • Experience with electrical concepts and safety precautions related to IT equipment installation is desirable.

CERTIFICATES LICENSES REGISTRATIONS:

  • A valid drivers license with an acceptable driving record is required.
  • CompTIA Network certification is highly preferred.
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or similar industry-recognized networking certification is a plus.
  • Successful attainment or renewal of either CCNA CCNP or CompTIA Network certification is required within the first eighteen (18) months of employment and must stay valid during employment.

Ability to read analyze and interpret general business periodicals professional journals technical procedures complex technical documentation instructional manuals safety rules operating and maintenance instructions and governmental regulations. Ability to write comprehensive reports business correspondence system documentation and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively prepare and present technical information and respond to questions from groups of administrators staff vendors and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add subtract multiply and divide in units of measurement using whole numbers common fractions and decimals. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and in the display and interpretation of data. Ability to apply concepts of statistical analysis fractions percentages ratios and proportions to practical situations including system capacity planning and budget management.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to interpret and apply common sense understanding in carrying out complex instructions furnished in written oral diagram or schedule form. Ability to analyze complex information identify critical issues and use logic to address work-related issues and problems often involving multiple integrated systems. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete and abstract variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential for system design troubleshooting and security incident response.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements Board of Education policies and relevant legal/regulatory mandates (e.g. data privacy).

  • Proficiency in installing configuring and troubleshooting network hardware (switches routers firewalls wireless access points) and client devices.
  • Solid understanding of TCP/IP DNS DHCP VLANs and network security fundamentals.
  • Experience with network cabling standards and practices (e.g. TIA/EIA 568A/B fiber optics).
  • Familiarity with VoIP systems and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of network monitoring and management software.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
  • Strong customer service orientation and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks prioritize effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy in work and documentation.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

Physical demands require routine lifting of items weighing up to 50 pounds (e.g. servers cameras control panels) and occasional lifting/moving of items up to 75 pounds. Routine local travel between district sites is required; no overnight travel is required with the exception of conferences or specialized training. Duties are conducted indoors and outdoors sometimes in network closets or areas with varying environmental conditions. Duties require constant work with computers and monitors and interaction with electronic and electrical equipment creating possible eyestrain and requiring adherence to safety procedures. May require working at heights (e.g. on ladders for camera or speaker installation/maintenance) or in confined spaces.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to sit stand walk talk listen use hands to finger handle or feel travel from building to other sites and/or reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment for this position varies. When presenting to a group or working in an office the noise level may be moderate to relatively quiet. When working in server rooms network closets or during system installations the noise level may be louder. The terms of employment detailed in this job description are based on full time employment during the school year. Conditions of employment are adjusted for part time employees or individuals who are hired for less than an entire school year.
