IRVING INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT

COMMUNICATIONS & STRATEGIC INITIATIVES COORDINATOR

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Communications & Strategic Initiatives Coordinator

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Marketing & Communications

PAY GRADE: Admin 3A (230 Days) DEPARTMENT: Communications (Administration Bldg.)

DATE REVISED: June 2025

A Letter of Assurance will be issued for this position.

PRIMARY PURPOSE: To advance Irving ISDs communications and marketing efforts by creating and implementing clear compelling communication strategies that engage and inform all district stakeholders. Through storytelling digital and print media event planning and crisis communication support the communications & strategic initiatives coordinator helps build awareness of and support for the districts mission values and strategic initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Certification:

Bachelors degree in journalism marketing communications public relations or other related field.

Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Bilingual (preferred)
  • Experience in developing and promoting brand through storytelling photography and video production
  • Proven work experience researching and writing stories that are compelling and relevant to market
  • Proven project management experience working with clients from initial concept to full product
  • Demonstrated ability to organize plan manage and execute large events of 4000 attendees
  • Ability to deliver creative content (text image and video)
  • Familiarity with online marketing strategies and marketing channels
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in media relations including crisis communications
  • Multitasking and analytical
  • Demonstrated skills in writing proofreading and editing for proper grammar and punctuation (AP Style)
  • Knowledge of mass communication systems and newsletter distribution platforms
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite or Canva
  • Experience with website content management systems
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment
  • Strong organizational communication and interpersonal skills

Minimum Experience:

Three years of professional communications and marketing experience required

Experience in large event planning 4000 attendees

Experience in school environment or non-profit setting preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  1. Write and post human interest stories videos news briefs etc. on a weekly basis to engage inform and encourage audience to act
  2. Plan organize and execute large-scale events at district-level including catering event brand promotion logistics etc.
  3. Create a pipeline of original content and creative campaigns for the online newsroom and social media platforms to promote the districts brand
  4. Collaborate with videographer to develop informative engaging and brand-focused videos
  5. Ensure all published content meets a high standard of quality is relevant and useful for the audience
  6. Collaborate with other department marketing coordinators to produce engaging stories and videos
  7. Research audience preferences and discover current brand trends ensuring maximum effectiveness
  8. Work with assigned departments and schools to develop communication and marketing strategies including promotional materials and event planning assistance
  9. Work with graphic designer to create and produce high-quality branded materials
  10. Collaborate with team to ensure editorial calendar is representative of district happenings compelling stories and told through a variety of mediums
  11. Work with marketing and digital media coordinator to ensure stories videos and other material produce strong results
  12. Produce timely crisis communication on various platforms following the communications protocol and ensuring messages are appropriate for audience
  13. Lead internal communication efforts through twice-weekly newsletter and intranet postings
  14. Suggest new ways to attract prospective students like promotions and competitions
  15. Perform other duties as assigned

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Must maintain emotional control and exercise reasoning and problem-solving skills while under stress. Must demonstrate ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written). Should be able to interpret procedures and analyze data for decision-making. Frequent in-district and occasional in-state or national travel. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours.

Safety: Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training wearing personal protective equipment as required reporting injuries and incidents immediately to supervisor and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
