The Role

The Staff Accountant plays a key role in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the organizations financial records. Supporting the Senior Staff Accountant and Financial Services team this position is responsible for month-end processes capital asset management audit support and financial analysis. The role ensures financial compliance with internal policies and public sector accounting standards.

Key duties include but are not limited to:

General Accounting & Month-End Close where core accounting duties are performed to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting:

  • Prepare supporting documentation for investments interest allocations deferred revenues and miscellaneous income/expenses.
  • Assist in compiling monthly financial statements and working papers in compliance with PSAS.
  • Support preparation of internal and external financial reports including submissions to Statistics Canada CRA (charity returns) and the Government of Alberta.
  • Collaborate with departments to provide financial insights and respond to information requests.

Capital Asset Management to maintain accurate records of tangible capital assets and support related reporting:

  • Review and validate asset-related invoices ensuring accurate classification and compliance with policies and standards.
  • Input asset additions disposals and transfers into the capital asset system.
  • Monitor work-in-progress (WIP) projects evaluate expenditures for capitalization and prepare necessary journal entries.
  • Assist in preparing asset reports for audit and financial statement purposes.

Audit & Financial Statement Support for preparation and coordination of internal and external audits as well as year-end reporting:

  • Retrieve and organize documentation and samples requested by auditors.
  • Extract analyze and compile general ledger data for interim and year-end audit processes.
  • Contribute to preparation of year-end financial statements including detailed schedules and notes.
  • Participate in internal control testing and support compliance with audit guidelines.

Forecasting & Financial Analysis Support that contributes to financial planning forecasting and decision-support activities:

  • Assist with quarterly forecast cycles by analyzing and summarizing financial data across departments.
  • Support preliminary reviews of department performance.
  • Provide ad hoc financial analysis and modeling to aid in budgeting and resource planning.
  • Work with Senior Business Advisors to validate data and prepare for stakeholder meetings.

Other duties as assigned to provide support for special initiatives system upgrades and team continuity.

Requirements

The successful candidate will have a Bachelors Degree in Commerce Business Administration Management or related field and a minimum of 3 years relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Necessary skills and attributes to be successful in this role include:

  • Knowledge of the CICA Handbook Public Sector Accounting Standards Income Tax Act and auditing standards/best practices;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Word Excel PowerPoint and Outlook;
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills;
  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to build strong relationships across the organization; and
  • A high level of integrity confidentiality professionalism and accountability.
