Job Description

JOB TITLE: Fleet/Mechanic Supervisor WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Nonexempt

REPORTS TO: Associate Director

for Transportation

DEPT./SCHOOL: Maintenance/Transportation DATE REVISED: April 2020

Center

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Manage and supervise the vehicle maintenance program of all district-owned vehicles.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Experience:

High School Diploma or Equivalent

Associates Degree preferred

ASE Master Certification desired

Valid Texas Commercial Drivers License with Passenger and School Bus

Endorsement

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of maintenance software

Knowledge of inventory and part ordering procedures

Knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines

Knowledge of air and hydraulic brake systems

Knowledge of vehicle electrical systems

Personal Computer skills

General mechanical skills

Experience:

Five years of mechanical experience

Three years of supervisory experience is preferred

Previous experience as maintenance shop foreman preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  1. Support the educational goals of the district.

  1. Contribute to the recommendation of sound policies directed toward program improvement.

  1. Work with the Associate Director of Transportation in the design and implementation of innovations or improvements in the operation of the vehicle maintenance division.
  2. Supervise the districts vehicle maintenance program.

  1. Develop training programs for vehicle maintenance personnel.

  1. Evaluate the job performance of employees to ensure effectiveness.

  1. Make sound recommendations to the Associate Director of Transportation regarding personnel placement transfer retention and dismissal.

  1. Assist the Associate Director of Transportation in formulating budgets specific to the vehicle maintenance program.

  1. Responsible for compiling filing and maintaining all reports specific to the vehicle maintenance program.

  1. Implement plans for preventative maintenance schedules for all district-owned vehicles.

  1. Demonstrate behavior that is professional ethical and responsible and serve as a role model for all transportation department staff.

  1. Regular attendance: must be willing and able to report to work at the designated work site on a regular daily basis according to established work schedule.

  1. Work with the districts Purchasing Manager to establish an effective parts management and inventory system.

  1. Maintain a computerized inventory of parts and supplies for the vehicle maintenance program.

  1. Use thirty percent (30%) of work time towards actual mechanical work.

  1. Follow district policy concerning uniforms.

  1. Comply with all state district and departmental policies and procedures.

  1. Perform other duties or responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervise and evaluate the performance of mechanics mechanic helpers and other personnel assigned to the vehicle maintenance program.

EQUIPMENT USED:

Personal Computer office supplies telephone; hand tools hydraulic jacks electric drills electric grinders air drills air grinders air chisels hand trucks forklifts hydraulic lift gates high-pressure washers ladders; motor vehicles including school bus two-way radio.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mental Demands:

Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) concentration reasoning skills reading instructing and emotional control in stressful situations

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:


Ability to conduct on-site inspections of all vehicle repair and maintenance operations. Driving walking lifting (under 50lbs.); inside and outside work; temperature extremes; humidity extremes; noise; slippery surfaces; sunlight exposure; working with hands in water and cleaning products; working under and around vehicles; wearing safety eyewear; works around moving objects and vehicles.

School district employees may be required to work from home and use their personal electronic devices.
