Exercise Science Faculty with Strength and Conditioning

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is a 9-month Exercise Science faculty appointment with 25% workload release for strength and conditioning responsibilities for the academic year with an additional summer stipend available for strength and conditioning responsibilities.

The Exercise Science faculty position reporting to the Exercise Science Program Director and Division Chair of Health Sciences teaches and advises in the Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science program.

Strength and conditioning responsibilities include providing education and programming to coaching staff on topics such as motivation proper nutrition conditioning resistance training mobility and recovery to help athletes develop to the best of their ability. Strength and conditioning responsibilities are under the direction of the Vice President for Athletics.

FACULTY FUNCTIONS

  • Teach courses within the exercise science program or related programs
  • Advise and/or mentor students through posted office hours electronic communications and other appropriate methods
  • Contribute to the curricular development of the exercise science program
  • Contribute to university and program assessment
  • Actively participate in university meetings and/or committees or task forces
  • Participate in college-related activities such as registration student recruitment and student retention
  • Review course syllabi for inclusion of exercise science knowledge skills and abilities
  • Participate in University service and professional development
  • Maintain knowledge and relevancy regarding program policies and procedures the university academic catalog and the faculty handbook
  • Perform additional job-related duties as assigned by the Program Director and/or Division Chair

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING FUNCTIONS

  • Design and implement strength training and conditioning programs in-season off-season and preseason for all USM-sanctioned male and female athletic programs in a manner that reflects research-driven practices to improve sport performance and reduce injuries
  • Work in cooperation with the sports medicine or athletic training staff in the rehabilitation and strengthening of injured athletes
  • Facilitate a collaborative relationship among sport coaches sports medicine and the strength and conditioning staff
  • Develop systems for tracking athlete attendance and athlete progress in conjunction with the sport coaches.
  • Conduct an annual needs-analysis for each sport team in conjunction with the sport coach and the teams athletic trainer at the conclusion of each sport season
  • Educate and train coaching staff to safely implement conditioning programs
  • Guide and mentor coaching staff implementing the strength and conditioning programs established to ensure student safety
  • Meet with coaching staff utilizing conditioning programs throughout the applicable sport season
  • Perform additional job-related duties as assigned by the VP for Athletics

REQUIREMENTS/MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of an earned Masters degree in an area of study that compliments the program such as Exercise Science Kinesiology Biomechanics Biology etc.
  • Must hold at least one of the following certifications:
    1. CSCS from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA)
    2. SCCC from the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCA)
  • Prior teaching experience at the postsecondary level preferred
  • Excellent communication interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Affinity with the overall mission of the University of Saint Mary
