The Louisiana Special Schools are experiencing a criticalshortage of certified teachers school counselors interpreters and educators of the Deaf or hard of hearing and Visually Impaired.

Teacher Outreach Services (Orientation and Mobility/ Visual Impairments) LSVI

2 vacancies. Position #and Position #

These are full time 9.5 months and 7.5 hours per day positions. TRAVEL WILL BE REQUIRED

To be filled for the 2025-2026 school year.

The Teacher Outreach Services (Orientation and Mobility/ Visual Impairments) will provide needed services for students with visual impairments in the areas of visual impairments and Orientation and Mobility. *Refer to Job Specifications*

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors degree or higher in Education or a related field.
Possess or is eligible for Louisiana Ancillary Certification in Orientation and Mobility as outlined in Part CXXXI Title 28/Educaton; Bulletin 746-Louisiana Standards for State Certification of School Personnel; Chapter 4 Subchapter A-410 and or Visual Impairments.
ACVREP OR NOMC Certification in Orientation and Mobility.
If only certified in Visual Impairments must be willing to obtain O&M Certification as a condition of employment.
Knowledge of appropriate skills in orientation and mobility and the use of low vision aids.
Must possess or be willing to acquire knowledge of and ability to apply current standards-based educational practices associated with children who are blind/visually impaired to a variety of settings
Knowledge of appropriate teaching methods in orientation and mobility and other aids related to visual impairments/blindness which cover the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) for the Visually Impaired.
Must possess a current Drivers License and the ability to be certified through the State Driver Safety Program
Must have access to reliable transportation to retrieve/return state vehicles and/or rental vehicles in order to perform job duties. Must have access to personal telephone services at home. Frequent travel greater than 100 miles/day is required

Program Management Responsibilities

Programmatic Responsibilities
  • Travel throughout Louisiana to provide outreach services to children and their families.
  • Travel to LSVI campus on annually identified dates to assist with instruction and student activities such as White Cane Day Braille Challenge etc. as directed by the supervisor.
  • Administer prescribed pre and post tests to evaluate the student progress.
  • Provide input for decisions regarding placement of children in appropriate educational programs.
  • Use designated curricula and materials in the teaching/learning process in a variety of approaches and techniques which develop lesson objectives and meet child and family needs encompassing the ECC.
  • Prepare and utilize appropriate materials to meet specific needs of the child and the family.
  • Develop weekly lesson plans for children ages 0 3 for supervisory review.
  • Specify learner outcomes in clear concise objectives; include activities that develop objectives; identify materials needed for lessons; and state method(s) of evaluation.
  • Provide services based on data driven vision/O&M assessments

  • Demonstrate reliability and punctuality in attendance and in meeting obligations.
  • Exhibit professional ethics.
  • Exhibit initiative and recognize and follow established communication channels.
  • Exhibit a willingness to accept and use suggestions for improvement.

  • May be required to develop and implement a Professional Growth Plan in consultation with the designated supervisor.
  • May be required to complete a self-evaluation.
  • Maintain an appropriate student-adult relationship and respect the individual worth and dignity of each student.
  • Demonstrate appropriate and effective skills in Braille orientation and mobility adaptive technology and low vision aids.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
