Job Description

The Department of Bioethics and Humanities at the University of Washington invites applications for an Assistant Teaching professor in Clinical Ethics (non-tenure eligible). This position is part-time (60%). A full-time position (100%) may be available for applicants who possess or who obtain external funding. This position is not eligible for visa or permanent residence sponsorship.

The full time equivalent base salary range for this position is $9500 to $9900 per month ($114000 to $118800 annually) commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Assistant Teaching professors are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). The start date will be early September 2025. The department will fill one position under this recruitment.

All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching research and goal is to recruit a strong candidate who will build a long and successful career that advances the clinical and healthcare ethics education mission of the Department.

Duties: This position will be responsible for contributing to the revision and expansion of clinical and healthcare ethics curricula serving as the Director of the departments annual Summer Seminar in Healthcare Ethics teaching up to three clinical ethics courses annually and sharing responsibilities to mentor and advise students and trainees enrolled in the departments educational programs. This position serves a diverse range of students including established healthcare professionals healthcare trainees as well as undergraduate and graduate students taking courses and completing degree programs in the department.

The positions service responsibilities will include but not be limited to participating as a consultant on UW Medicines Ethics Consultation Service actively advancing the profession and discipline of bioethics and positively contributing to our diverse and inclusive community of faculty staff and students.

Environment: The Department of Bioethics and Humanities was originally launched in 1964 as a Department of Biomedical History. The current departments faculty excel in teaching research and community service and represent diverse scholarly fields including medicine genetics philosophy public health health services medical sociology religious studies education and other areas. The Departments interdisciplinary nature is evidenced by collaborative partnerships with UW Schools of Medicine Law Nursing Pharmacy Public Health and Social Work as well as the College of Arts and Sciences. Specific areas of interest of the faculty include ethical implications of genomic research community-based participatory research social justice and access to healthcare neuroethics global perspectives in bioethics social inequalities and disparities in health medical errors and palliative/end of life care. The Department offers a masters degree in bioethics an undergraduate minor and several professional training programs.



All candidates must have

  • A doctoral degree or equivalent with training in moral theory and its application to clinical ethics.
  • A record of high-quality and innovative teaching curriculum development and student mentorship in bioethics or a closely related field.
  • Prior experience leading healthcare ethics consultation.
  • Prior successful collaborations across interdisciplinary teams; and
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity diversity and inclusion.
