RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF THE MUHC
The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) is a world-renowned biomedical and hospital research centre. Located in Montreal Quebec the Institute is the research arm of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. The RI-MUHC is supported in part by the Fonds de recherche du Qubec - Sant (FRQS).
Position summary
The incumbent oversees the employees and the users who access the human specimen processing laboratories at the Glen and the MGH and the day-to-day operation of the Test Center. Establishes priorities and coordinates execution of projects and services that are laboratory related. Prepares cost quotations for specimen collection processing storage or shipping services. Develops procedures and makes recommendations to improve laboratory efficiency improve processes related to bio-specimens. Acts as resource person for all laboratory related issues resolves problems and instructs others. Maintains equipment and laboratory space. The incumbent implement and manage the training of laboratory users.
General Duties
Oversees the day-to-day operations of the laboratories and test center. Coordinates the execution of projects and services. Establishes priorities and ensures adherence to schedules. Ensures efficiency and quality of laboratory services
Collect specimens on adult and pediatric patients according to the established standard techniques and current policies
Perform specimen processing such as centrifugation aliquoting buffy coats and other laboratory techniques according to specifications of procedures of the clinical trials
Participates in the laboratory training of new and existing personnel
Ensure all direct reports training are up-to-date such as Good Clinical Practice Transport of Dangerous Goods study specific training and others as needed
Participates in the revision and implementation of standard operating procedures and work instructions
Makes recommendations to improve and implement laboratory work efficiency
Reviews and analyzes laboratory manual and advises on feasibility
Establishes time and cost estimates. Prepares cost quotations
Trains laboratory personnel on safety rules and a variety of specialized technical tasks in fields such as but not limited to blood draw nasopharyngeal swab urine collection aseptic technique microscopy specimen centrifugation (cold and room temperature) specimen aliquoting buffy coat extractions PBMC and cold storage of biological specimens
Acts as resource person resolves problems and instructs others. Provides technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods the use of equipment and techniques
Maintains records and logs that are laboratory and test center related
Ensures compliance with safety regulations in the use of equipment
Ensures proper storage handling and disposal of hazardous materials
Maintains equipment in good working conditions
Ensures appropriate inventory. Recommends and purchases equipment and material
Manages and allocate services requests and bookings via iLab. Verify the dollar amount being charged
Uses a variety of equipment such as microscopes centrifuges balances micropipettes laboratory freezers Biosafety cabinet laboratory analyzers and computers
Manages Cerner/LIS accounts accessibility participates in its development with upcoming updates and trains individuals on the use of the system
Performs other laboratory related duties as well as administrative tasks
Participate in the interviews of new staff
Responsible for approving timesheets vacation sick days and personal days
Meets bi-weekly with the manager to provide work progress update and performance metrics
Performs any other tasks as asked by the Technical Platform Manager.
Experience with specimen collection and processing in clinical environment
Experience in medical laboratory technology
Experience in clinical research is an asset
Strong background in health and safety for laboratories
Ability to work in a dynamic environment
Experience with Cerner-LIS is an asset
Excellent organizational skills ability to multi-task and prioritizing time-sensitive issues
Experience in creation and implementation of Standard Operating Procedure and Work Instruction
Self-directed and organized
Able to work as part of a team
Excellent interpersonal skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in French and English
Good computer skills: Office 360 Microsoft Excel Word Cerner iLab Agilent.
Status : Full time (35 hours/week)
Pay Scale: $62389.60 - $115824.80/year Commensurate with education & work experience.
Work Shift: Mondays to Fridays between 8 am and 5 pm
