Description

Full-Time Lifeguard

Start Date: August 2025
Pay: $16/hour based on experience
Schedule Options:

  • One full-time lifeguard working MondayFriday 8:45 AM3:30 PM

Overview

Lifeguards at Altoona Campus work under the direct supervision of the Aquatics Director to ensure the safety and well-being of all members and guests. Lifeguards are responsible for maintaining a professional presence enforcing safety protocols and creating a fun engaging and secure environment for everyone. They play a key role in keeping our pool areas safe welcoming and enjoyable for all.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Maintain active surveillance of the pool and surrounding areas using proper scanning techniques.
  • Enforce all safety rules and policies consistently and respectfully.
  • Communicate effectively with members guests and coworkers to maintain a safe welcoming environment.
  • Respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies and activate the Emergency Action Plan (EAP) when needed.
  • Rescue Techniques & First Aid: Apply appropriate and effective rescue techniques when necessary ensuring the safety of both the swimmer and yourself. Administer first aid or CPR in accordance with American Red Cross standards when required maintaining composure and professionalism in all emergency situations. Ensure prompt and accurate documentation of all actions taken during incidents or rescues.
  • Keep accurate records of incidents rescues chemical tests and member interactions.
  • Wear proper lifeguard attire at all times including a rescue tube uniform shirt lifeguarding suit fanny pack with first aid gear and whistle.
  • Assist with programming when requested.
  • Attend all mandatory in-service training sessions (with at least two weeks notice provided).
  • Report any unsafe conditions or equipment directly to the Aquatics Director.
  • Maintain physical fitness to meet the demands of rescues and emergency response.
  • Follow pool closing and weather procedures as outlined in EAPs.

Chemical Testing Requirements

  • Conduct Taylor chemical tests on the hot tub every 2 hours.
  • Conduct chemical tests on the main pool every 24 hours.
  • Record all chemical readings and report irregularities immediately to the Aquatics Director.

Certifications Required (must be current and valid prior to the first day of work)

  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer
  • First Aid
  • AED (Automated External Defibrillator) Certification

Lifeguard Skills Test Requirements

  • Swim-Tread-Swim: Swim 150 yards using freestyle and/or breaststroke followed by a 2-minute tread without the use of arms then immediately swim another 50 yards.
  • Timed Brick Event: Swim 20 yards retrieve a 10-pound brick from the bottom return to the start on your back holding the brick to your chest and exit the pool in under 1 minute 40 seconds.

Customer Service Expectations

  • Be approachable positive and professional at all times.
  • Show patience and respect toward all members guests and staff.
  • Display strong communication self-discipline and reliability.
  • Work well as part of a team and be willing to take initiative.

Phone Policy

  • Phones may only be used to clock in/out contact the Aquatics Director or in emergencies.
  • Phones must otherwise be kept in the office or a locker.
  • Phones may be used on break or to play family-friendly music if connected to the Bluetooth speaker and stored away during use.

Physical Fitness Expectations

  • Lifeguards must maintain a level of physical fitness to respond effectively in rescue situations and handle the physical demands of the job.
  • You will be expected to perform rescues and other physically demanding tasks while ensuring your safety and that of others. Regular physical fitness maintenance is part of your responsibility.

Teamwork & Initiative

  • Lifeguards must work cohesively with other team members to maintain safety and provide the best service to our members and guests.
  • You will be expected to demonstrate leadership and take initiative as required helping to foster a supportive and effective team environment.
