Job Description

GENERAL MECHANIC
1.0FTE Permanent Position 40 Hours

Hours of Work: 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

$29.08 per hour (CUPE Maintenance 3 Salary Grid)

Reports to the Lead Supervisor of Infrastructure Buildings & Plumbing


Interested applicants are required to submit a cover letter and resume.
Interviews and practical testing will be conducted.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assist the Lead Mechanic with their principal duties
  • Preventive Maintenance - including checking testing lubricating cleaning minor repairs and adjustments changing filters tagging and reporting on building systems - these systems may include HVAC heating exhaust systems circulation equipment compressors door and window hardware water and septic systems outdoor equipment emergency lighting systems or building fixtures
  • Grounds Work including turf repairs planting brush removal pothole repairs minor walk drive and step repairs railing and fence repairs snow removal assistance sign erecting flagpole repairs shed and equipment repairs
  • Exterior Work including repairs to siding and eaves troughing caulking flashing and weather stripping skirting and security screens minor brick and mortar pointing catch basin and manhole cover work
  • Interior Repairs including minor repairs and replacements to floors step and tread repairs drywall and plaster paint touch-ups lockers ceiling systems furniture and building fixtures
  • Equipment Repairs assisting the custodial and trade groups with repairs as outlined in the Boards training courses including minor plumbing repairs and minor electrical repairs to devices up to 130 volts - adjustments and minor repairs to bearings fan units lighting systems battery replacements door and window hardware systems ground level A/C and fan installations
  • Emergency Repairs including repairs that affect the safety security and proper operation of Board buildings and equipment
  • Equipment Operation including hand tools and the use of power saws grinding sanding and boring tools use of ladders and scaffolding including erective and maintenance of equipment
  • Paperwork responsible for the acquisition of supplies inventory related duties and the completion of required paperwork reports timesheets and logs connected specifically with the work assigned
  • Truck driving delivery and moving duties which may include trailer towing materials acquisition and delivery transportation and/or set-up of equipment and light vehicle cleaning and maintenance
  • Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications:
  • Two years of recent experience in commercial construction
  • Good knowledge of carpentry and the ability to demonstrate these skills
  • Ability to interpret drawings and blueprints
  • Knowledge and understanding of pertinent safety and building codes regulations and legislation
  • Computer skills
  • Successful completion of HWDSB Training Courses (Appendix E Section 1 of the CUPE Collective Agreement)
  • Valid Class G Drivers license and reliable transportation
  • Must be willing to work evenings and weekends with suitable prior notice
