Job Description

We are working closely alongside a Local Authority in Southwark to assist with the appointment of an Environment Enforcement Officer on a 2.5-month contract highly likely to be extended at clients discretion. Please apply with your CV for immediate consideration.

Rate of Pay: 18.11 - 23.88 per hour

Summary:

The Environmental Enforcement Officer plays a critical role in maintaining and improving the boroughs environment by addressing enviro-crime through education engagement and enforcement. This experienced officer will lead investigations and enforcement actions relating to a range of offences including commercial waste handling fly-tipping noise nuisances dog fouling illegal vehicle trading graffiti fly-posting and other environmental crimes under the Environmental Protection Act (EPA) and related legislation.

The post requires an assertive knowledgeable and community-minded individual capable of proactive patrolling managing complex investigations collaborating with partners and improving environmental outcomes.


Responsibilities:

  • Conduct both proactive and reactive patrols including weekends and evenings to monitor and enforce environmental compliance.
  • Respond to service requests and taskings in line with operational priorities.
  • Gather and present evidence to support enforcement actions including prosecutions and court proceedings.
  • Issue Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) Community Protection Notices (CPNs) and statutory notices as appropriate.
  • Liaise with internal departments and external partners (e.g. Police HMRC London Fire Brigade) to support coordinated enforcement and problem-solving initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Level 2 educational attainment (e.g. GCSEs); further qualifications in environmental enforcement regulatory services or public protection desirable.

Legal Knowledge:
  • In-depth understanding and experience of EPA 1990 and other relevant legislation (e.g. Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act Control of Pollution Act).

Requirements:
  • Proven experience conducting enforcement in a local authority or similar regulatory setting.
  • Experience investigating and acting on breaches of environmental law.
  • Familiarity with urban multi-cultural environments and community engagement.
  • Experience presenting evidence in court or at tribunal.
  • Track record of achieving enforcement and service outcomes
