This position will serve as Police Captain reporting directly to the Deputy Director and will perform supervisory administrative and managerial duties and responsibilities over specific functional areas of the agency. Responsible for assisting in the overall management and supervision of the agency by direct supervision of the Lieutenants with indirect supervision of the Sergeants. Positions will assume command of and responsibility for the department in the absence of the Chief of Police and/or Deputy Chief.
The purpose of the State Capitol Police Section is to provide police protection and security for state employees and visitors as well as state owned and leased property; to conduct crime prevention and employee safety programs; to provide investigatory services for criminal activities occurring on state government property; to provide executive protection for federal state and local government officials and other visiting dignitaries to state property; to monitor fire and intrusion alarms; and to notify appropriate resources for incidences such as fire broken water lines power failure and malfunctioning mechanical equipment during both business and non-business hours.

DPS is comprised of approximately 6000 permanent positions and nearly 13000 NC National Guard soldiers and airmen. To qualify for this position applicants must demonstrate ALL of the following KSAs:
Advanced working knowledge of and skill in standard law enforcement equipment its care and safe use according to Departmental Policy.
Advanced working knowledge of the laws relating to the rights of suspects search and seizure maintaining the chain of evidence and arrest authority.
Thorough working knowledge of investigative techniques and case preparation requirements for standard traffic and criminal cases.
Thorough working knowledge of criminal and traffic laws.
Management Preferences (Optional): These skills are not required but managers may choose to interview/select applicants who demonstrate Management Preferences.
Candidates for Captain must have a minimum of
Two (2) years of full-time law enforcement experience as a law enforcement Lieutenant or higher from a creditable agency in North Carolina and completed twelve (12) years of credible sworn law enforcement service in North Carolina.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND six years of experience in law enforcement work two of which must have been as a supervisor
or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications
Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission
