The mission of Catholic Charities is to serve those most in need and to advocate for justice in the community.

As the need for our services grows and becomes increasingly complex Catholic Charities is working to adapt and respond. We respond in three ways preventing poverty meeting basic needs in times of crisis and creating pathways out of poverty.

Hope Street is an emergency shelter for young people aged 18-24 offering a safe place to stay and holistic care. Hope Streets trauma-informed care model creates a safe place for youth to receive support for 30-90 days as they work to secure permanent housing.

WAGE RANGE:$18.00-$24.50/hourly

JOB SUMMARY:Catholic Charities is seeking a fun and dynamic trauma-informed culturally-aware individual to work as a full-time Youth Support Specialist level I or level II depending on qualifications.The Youth Support Specialist provides support and guidance to youth experiencing homelessness at Hope Street for Homeless Youth. The Youth Support Specialists primary responsibility is to provide a safe and healthy environment and connect youth to services that lead to housing stability. The Youth Support Specialist coordinates client services with the team and monitors client progress. Ensure that policies and procedures are enforced consistently.


As the largest youth shelter in Minnesota Hope Street offers a range of supportive services to help young people aged 18-24 overcome homelessness. With a focus on trauma-informed care Hope Street provides essential services like case management mental health counseling and life skills training.

The shelters goal is to provide a temporary safety net while equipping young people with the tools they need for long-term independence and future success.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Utilize nine guiding principles in engagement of youth. Guiding principles include journey oriented trauma-informed non-judgmental harm reduction trusting youth-adult relationships strengths-based positive youth development holistic and collaboration.
  2. Complete intakes assessments and benefit applications to meet the needs of clients and programs.
  3. Evaluate facilitate and monitor services and client progress to meet established goals and objectives.
  4. Coordinate with case managers to adjust case plans as necessary.
  5. Refer clients to appropriate community resources and coordinate services.
  6. Represent Catholic Charities at community meetings task forces and other events when required.
  7. Be vigilant of the facilitys safety and security.
  8. Use conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques to defuse crisis situations when necessary.
  9. Respond to and resolve all incidents of chemical abuse theft threats and program rule violations.
  10. Supervise individual medical needs of youth including the administration of medications and treatment in accordance with instructions from medical staff. Record medications on charts monitor security of medications.
  11. Serve as a mandated reporter.
  12. May drive a van to transport clients when required.
  13. Regularly attend and participate in team meetings.
  14. Other duties as assigned.

Youth Support Specialist II - In addition to above

15. Has demonstrated mastery of all YSS1 tasks and responsibilities. At Hope Street this includes completing intakes discharges and all required documentation with minimal support.

16. Understands program daily policy and procedures and is able to act independently.

QUALIFICATIONS:

All Youth Support Specialists

  • High school diploma and one-year related experience or Associates Degree.
  • Bachelors degree preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with and relate to diverse populations including low-income homeless and individuals with mental health issues.

Youth Support Specialist II

  • At least one year experience in this program and/or combined education and relevant experience based on hiring grid.
