Responsibilities
Protects public health safety private property and investments by inspecting and approving building construction alteration repair and occupancy and the installation and operation of fire protection systems and other equipment to ensure compliance with approved plans and applicable federal state and local codes and ordinances. The incumbent investigates complaints regarding alleged violations of code standards or permit requirements and takes appropriate corrective action. Acts as liaison between the Fire Department and the Building Services Division. The incumbent serves as an expert witness in the prosecution of violations and appears in court to document these violations.
Minimum Qualifications
Associates degree or greater in Fire Protection Engineering Fire Science Technology Safety/Risk ManagementEngineering in either Architectural Civil Electrical/Electronic Industrial Mechanical or Systems or related field.
OR
Associates Degree and 3 years of experience in fire protection system design or installation riskmanagement loss control fire prevention or firefighting
Degree must be from a college or university that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or equivalent region.
Certifications
Must possess at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment State of Ohio Fire Safety Inspector certification.
Possession of a Building Inspector certification at time of appointment is preferred. However Interim Building Inspector certification will be accepted providing individuals with an Interim Building Inspector certification meet Ohio Building Code Section 103.3.4 Ohio Building Code Academy and examination requirements:
1. Complete the Ohio Building Code Academy required during the first year of the two-year interim certification granted by the board. If during the evaluation phase of the Ohio Building Code Academy it is determined that the applicant must complete additional coursework the additional coursework must be completed during the two-year interim certification period. If the additional coursework is not completed during the two-year interim certification period and the applicant presents evidence of complying with the examination requirements of Section 103.3.4(2) the board may grant a one time one-year extension to allow completion of the additional coursework.
2. Furnish the board-approved certification or evidence of passing approved examinations for the appropriate certification categories issued by a national model code organization or testing agency or entity recognized by the board.
License Requirements
Must possess a valid drivers license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

Background Check
A background investigation and evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity is required prior to candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position including current city employees seeking transfer promotion demotion etc. into a classified position.
Medical Examination & Drug and Nicotine Testing
Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination including drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees.
