Job Description

Organization Overview:

Colorado Legal Services (CLS) is Colorados statewide nonprofit legal aid program with thirteen offices providing civil legal assistance to low-income Coloradans throughout the state. CLS provides free legal assistance in a broad variety of legal areas including family law public benefits eviction defense consumer protection services to survivors of serious crime and human trafficking and many others.

Position Summary:

Our new Intake Specialist will greet guests and clients in the Colorado Springs Office answer phone calls complete intake screening for new applicants and provide office and administrative support as assigned by the Intake Supervisor and Managing Attorney.

This position is in-person and full time (37.5 hours/week). Because of the nature of the job hybrid work is not possible for this note that this position is a two-year term grant-funded position with the (possibility but no guarantee) of renewal at the end of the two-year term.


Essential Duties:

  • Greet all applicants/clients/visitors to the office with patience and compassion as many are in distress due to their urgent legal issues or have experienced trauma related to their case;
  • Use Spanish language skills to assist clients.
  • Be sensitive to the needs of low-income marginalized and vulnerable individuals;
  • Provide meaningful referrals to other resources for persons who cannot be served by CLS;
  • Manage incoming calls to the Colorado Springs Office. Take appropriate messages and respond to all e-mails and phone messages in a timely manner;
  • Screen applicants for program eligibility including financial and citizenship/non-citizen eligibility and conduct conflict-of-interest checks;
  • Become knowledgeable about the legal issues accepted by CLS and use that information to gather information related to callers legal problems. Make initial determination as to suitability of applicant for CLS services or other legal or community referrals;
  • Prepare various internal and legal forms as needed;
  • Create new electronic client files or file documents in established client files. Scan documents to electronic files and maintain electronic records of all actions taken on client files;
  • Attend unit/office meetings training sessions and other informational meetings as required to maintain current working knowledge of the programs policies and procedures as well as the computer system hardware and software requirements and capabilities; and
  • Assist other intake staff paralegals attorneys and other staff as needed.


Required Qualifications:

  • Spanish fluency or proficiency.
  • A high school diploma GED or equivalent.
  • Familiarity and basic competency with Microsoft Office other software programs and office equipment including copiers/scanners and phones strong written and oral communications skills including spelling and proofreading skills and basic knowledge of or ability to learn legal terminology.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including excellent customer service skills and professionalism in order to interact with a wide variety of people.
  • Organizational skills to thrive in a fast-paced work environment and juggle many competing demands. Must work effectively under pressure to meet tight deadlines.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Notary public certification.
  • Experience working with attorneys in a supportive capacity.


Compensation and Benefits:

We offer a generous plan that includes 100% employer paid premiums for employee health dental vision life and long-term disability insurance as well as partial employer paid premiums for spouses/dependents based on a sliding scale. We also offer Dependent Care and Medical Flexible spending accounts and an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). CLS contributes $200/month to each employees 403(b) retirement account and matches 100% of employee contributions up to 3% of employee salary; vesting occurs gradually will full vesting after 3 years of employment. Additionally CLS offers generous paid time-off and 13 paid holidays per year.
