The Senior Policy Aide to the Mayor provides high level assistance and coordination in research drafting and implementing policies and executing priority projects for the Mayor of the City of position frequently involves initiation of new projects and carrying out existing projects which may involve leading and directing executive level teams both within the City of Dayton and outside of the organization while supporting strategic and operational decision-making by City leaders.
Principal Accountabilities
Maintains awareness of the Mayors activities and coordinates same to advance policy priorities.
Develops plans and strategies to move the Mayors policy priorities forward including proposing adjustments to the policy that will result in successful outcome.
Maintains knowledge of legislation and rules proposed which relate to the Mayors policy priorities.
Provides coordination in various projects of the Mayors Office.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Senior Policy Aide to the Mayor reports to the Executive Assistant to the City Commission and works primarily for and receives work assignments from the Mayor. Incumbent generally performs work independently receiving instructions and after-the-fact review from the Mayor and/or Executive Assistant. Operates with self-direction and is expected to develop and execute plans to implement policy priorities for the Mayor and coordinate the logistics of major events.
Maintains familiarity with legislative and/or policy issues developing at the federal state and local levels to identify opportunities to advance the Mayors priorities and to propose modifications to policies in order to fully incorporate said priorities. The Senior Policy Aide must maintain significant contact with local state and federal private and public organizations. Responsible for coordinating activities of City initiatives and programming including facilitation of community partnerships and reinvestment projects.
On an ongoing basis the incumbent will coordinate with the Mayor to identify priorities craft policy identify partners to advance policy positions and will work with organizations to incorporate the Mayors policy positions into legislation rules and funding priorities.
The Senior Policy Aide is involved in many aspects of the Mayors Office beyond policy development and advancement including preparation of talking points for comments letters speeches and presentations; coordinating the planning of public and private events that are part of the Mayors Office and assisting on other projects in which the Mayors Office is involved.
Must maintain confidentiality.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors Degree in Public Administration or a closely related field AND 3 years of experience in public administration policy development or program administration.
Degree must be from a college or university that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or equivalent region.
License Requirements
Must possess a valid drivers license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination including drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees.
