Job Description

DEFINITION



Road Maintenance Worker I

This assignment is for the Garberville Crew.The crews are responsible for inspecting and maintaining the roadways in their area. They are also responsible for roadside maintenance such as brush cutting and tree trimming and since they do not use chemicals pesticides or herbicides ditches have to be maintained by hand or machine. They assess repair or replace drainage systems such as ditches and culverts as these are an integral component of road maintenance.

Please note:

This recruitment is specifically for the Freshwater crew however the referred list may be used to fill vacancies in any of the crews which include:

  • Hoopa
  • McKinleyville
  • Freshwater
  • Ferndale
  • Rohnerville
  • Garberville

Work Schedule:
  • Summer hours: M-Th 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM 1/2 hour lunch
  • Winter hours: M-F 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM 1/2 hour lunch

What Youll Do:

Under general supervision performs both routine and skilled heavy physical work in the maintenance repair and construction of roads; operates a variety of vehicles equipment and hand and power tools; performs related work as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS


Road Maintenance Worker I is the entry level class in this road maintenance series. Initially under close supervision incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties in road maintenance repair and construction. This class is alternately staffed with Road Maintenance Worker II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher level class.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD

Persons appointed to regular County positions serve a probationary period. This is normally six (6) months but could be up to one (1) year. All designated safety employees serve a one-year probationary period.


EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY

It is the Countys intention to hire only those workers who are authorized to work in the United States pursuant to the Immigration Act of 1990. If you are offered employment you will be required to verify your eligibility to work in the United States. For law enforcement positions you will be required to verify your U.S. citizenship or legalized status.


DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS

All County of Humboldt employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
