The South Bend Police Department Cadet Program is a non-sworn 4 year program. Cadets perform various non-sworn Law Enforcement station/field duties including but not limited to equipment operation report writing administrative communication and other duties as assigned by the Training Bureau.
Cadets will be assigned in rotating areas of the department. During the school year they are required to work 20 hours a week and 40 hours a week during the summer break. Work hours and days of the week will vary.
Cadets must be at least 18 years of age to a maximum of 23 years at the time of application and possess a valid drivers license. Cadets must be graduated from high school and enrolling to attend college in the next possible school term. Once a cadet is in college they must carry a minimum of 12 credit hours in an acceptable major to maintain employment. Cadets are required to maintain a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.
Cadets will receive an hourly rate. The pay will be $12.00 per hour. Cadets will receive paid tuition (up to $3500.00 per semester). This is in the form of a loan. Cadets will be eligible for a bonus of $250.00 per semester if the Cadets GPA is 3.5 or higher.
If a Cadet does not maintain a 2.0 GPA is asked to leave the program or does not successfully become a sworn member of the South Bend Police Department for a period of 3 years that Cadet will be required to pay the tuition money back to the City of South Bend. This tuition will be written off by the city. In the event the Cadet does not complete repayment by the time required from that date forward interest will accrue and be due in the maximum amount authorized by Title 24 of the Indiana Code.
