POSITION: ESA Certified School Nurse 180 days 1.0 FTE
LOCATION: Various School Buildings
REPORTS TO: Director of Student Supports
Purpose: To provide coordination of a school health program including the delivery of services to students and staff members in order to enhance health and wellness in the school community. To provide Registered Nurse coverage at Ellensburg High school. Duties are to be performed in accordance with the standards of professional nurse practice District policies and procedures and Washington State Law regarding nurse practice.
Responsibilities
- Develops and administers a coordinated health program.
- Provides supervision of Classified Staff Nurses substitute nurses and Health Room Assistants including orientation training assignment of schedules and coordination of nurse staff meetings.
- Collects and analyzes epidemiological and other school health information and provides statistical data as needed.
- Provides assistance in establishing an accident/injury prevention program to facilitate school safety as needed.
- Establishes a communicable disease prevention and control program in cooperation with local and state public health agencies.
- Manages school health records in accordance with district policy and procedure and state law; prepares and submits reports for the superintendent and state agencies as needed.
- Participates in the development of health-related policies and procedures in compliance with state mandates and current health practices.
- Provides staff in-service programs on health topics including blood borne pathogens CPR and First Aid and the District Exposure Control Plan as needed.
- Provides health related classroom instruction as needed.
- Provides and/or oversees implementation of professional nursing services first aid illness medication delegation PDA training and tracking and emergency care to students and staff including nursing assessments identifying health problems development of student health care plans making referrals for diagnosis and treatment recommending educational modifications providing follow-up and evaluation and maintaining appropriate documentation.
- Provides health information and counseling for students parents and staff.
- Oversees implementation of district policy and procedure in regard to medication protocol to safely store administer document and monitor the effectiveness of medication given at school.
- Supervises and/or provides screening and follow up for deficits in vision hearing growth and development and other physical deficits.
- Maintains accurate medical records to assure compliance with state mandates including immunizations and medical conditions.
- Participates as a crisis team member and provides crisis intervention for students and staff in the advent of a sudden illness or injury as needed.
- Makes appropriate assessments and referrals for suspected abuse/neglect as a mandated reporter.
- Makes recommendations for health services annual budget and critical needs requests.
- Maintains effective communication with administrators teachers other school personnel and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action to meet the health and safety needs of students.
- Initiates contact with and acts as a liaison between the home school community health agencies and the private medical sector to enhance the health and wellness of the school community.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding all school and health related issues.
- Participates as a member of the multidisciplinary team in the identification evaluation and placement of students into special education programs and writes the health component of the Individual Education Plan as needed.
- Participates as a member of the professional school nursing and education organizations and utilizes continuing education opportunities to enhance professional knowledge in both nursing and education fields.
- Participates as a member of the faculty on district committees and association activities as needed.
- Participates as an active member of the school community promoting health and wellness.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Supports.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Possess knowledge of health standards and hazards; safety practices and procedures; stages of child development; pediatric and family nursing practices; community health concepts; and pertinent policies codes regulations and/or laws.
- Possess skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job including adhering to safety practices; administering first aid; safely handling hazardous materials/waste; operating equipment used in clinical setting; operating standard office equipment and pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
- Ability to schedule a number of activities meetings and/or events; gather collate and/or classify data; communicate both orally and written in an effective manner; work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups in an effective manner; independently problem solve analyze issues interpret guidelines and create effective action plans; adapt to changing work priorities maintain confidentiality and work as a member of a team in an effective manner.

Qualifications
- Washington State Registered Nurse License
- Washington State ESA Certification as a School Nurse
- Current First Aid/CPR Card
- Must qualify to work in the proximity of children under the conditions of a WSP/FBI background check
