Job Summary:
The Head Varsity Baseball Coach is responsible for developing and leading a high school baseball program that emphasizes skill development sportsmanship academic success and team growth. The coach will plan and implement practice schedules supervise assistant coaches and oversee all team-related activities while ensuring compliance with North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) regulations and district policies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and direct all phases of the varsity baseball program including practices games and conditioning.
- Foster a positive inclusive and competitive team culture focused on student-athlete development.
- Promote academic achievement and monitor player eligibility.
- Develop off-season training programs and encourage participation in related athletic opportunities.
- Coordinate game and practice schedules in collaboration with the athletic director.
- Supervise and mentor assistant coaches and volunteer staff.
- Maintain inventory of equipment and ensure proper care and security of facilities.
- Ensure compliance with NCHSAA rules district athletic policies and safety procedures.
- Serve as a role model for sportsmanship integrity and character.
- Communicate effectively with players parents staff and the broader school community.
Essential Job Functions:
Program Leadership & Coaching
- Plan organize and lead all baseball practices games and off-season conditioning programs.
- Create a team culture grounded in accountability effort respect and sportsmanship.
- Model integrity and ethical behavior in all interactions with student-athletes and staff.
- Develop and implement effective strategies to improve individual and team performance.
- Provide supervision during practices games travel and team-related events.
Student-Athlete Development
- Promote the academic social and emotional development of all players.
- Monitor eligibility and academic progress in collaboration with teachers and counselors.
- Support character education and positive behavior both on and off the field.
- Develop individual training plans that address strengths and areas for improvement.
- Provide continuous feedback and goal-setting sessions with athletes.
- Emphasize leadership accountability and resilience through mentorship and team roles.
- Support the recruitment process for players interested in pursuing collegiate athletics.
Compliance & Safety
- Ensure full compliance with NCHSAA and district athletic policies eligibility requirements and safety guidelines.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records related to rosters physicals and permission forms.
- Follow all protocols for injury prevention reporting and emergency procedures.
Collaboration & Communication
- Supervise assistant coaches and provide mentoring and direction as needed.
- Communicate regularly with players families school staff and athletic administrators.
- Coordinate logistics for games transportation equipment and field maintenance.
- Represent the school in a positive and professional manner within the community and athletic league.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Prior coaching experience in baseball preferably at the high school level.
- Must meet NCHSAA coaching requirements including:
- NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching certification
- Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification
- Concussion and sudden cardiac arrest training
- Demonstrated knowledge of baseball rules strategy and training techniques.
- Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in leading a varsity-level athletic program.
- Strong organizational communication and leadership skills.
- Evidence of successful program-building and student mentorship.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be physically able to demonstrate baseball techniques and participate in athletic activity.
- Requires standing walking running and throwing for extended periods.
- Must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Exposure to outdoor weather conditions for practices and games.
- Must be able to travel with the team to games and events.
