Supervises and assists Automation Leads Automation Specialists and laboratory automation operations staff with tasks such as scheduling and prioritization of automation initiatives resource management as well as technical and compliance related issues. Strategically plans directs and implements improvements in automated systems processes and workflows to increase efficiency productivity and quality in the laboratory. Manages the work activities of Automation Leads (IIs and IIIs) and may perform client communication technical document review and complex troubleshooting of automated instrumentation and process-related issues. Assists the Associate Director/Director of Automation with strategic planning business development and expansion initiatives by providing mid-range (1-3 month) resource utilization predictions for laboratory automation staff and instrumentation.
Interacts with clients business development and/or lab departmental leads to collaboratively define laboratory automation projects and initiatives.
Manages and directs complex laboratory automation project optimization and validation activities ensuring adherence to quality expectations and/or best practice guidelines.
Reviews laboratory automation system design and/or process design for appropriate scientific approach and/or adherence to industry standards.
Reviews and approves data associated with automated instrumentation programs and/or processes for compliance to SOPs protocols and methods.
Reviews and approves laboratory investigations deviations and audits associated with laboratory automation instrumentation and/or processes.
Serves as a laboratory automation technical expert for client and/or regulatory audits.
Provides technical guidance and team coaching/mentorship.
Critically evaluates novel approaches to automated method development and applications as appropriate.
Reviews data integrity processes and recommends improvements; reviews technical requirements for instrument software validation efforts.
Assists in technical marketing prepares technical marketing materials and participates in poster and/or podium presentations at technical conferences.
Assists upper leadership in strategic planning budgeting new capabilities development and other responsibilties.
Keys to Success
Education and Experience:
Previous experience that provides the knowledge skills and abilities to perform the job (comparable to 9 years) or equivalent and relevant combination of education training & experience.
5 years of management responsibility
Proven leadership skills
Years of experience refers to typical years of related experience needed to gain the required knowledge skills and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the job. Years of experience are not to be used as the only determining factor in establishing the job class or making employment selection decisions.
Direct experience with automation instrumentation required; vendor service certification preferred
Experience with programming (Hamilton Venus TECAN EVOware or Fluent Control Thermo Momentum VB Python etc.) required; vendor programming certification (or equivalent) preferred
Ability to troubleshoot and assess a wide variety of analytical instrumentation and data acquisition systems
Full understanding of industry best practices for laboratory automation instrumentation and processes
Ability to critically review and make recommendations for optimization of automated programs and processes
Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities
Proven project management skills and proven ability to direct others through project management activities
Ability to cultivate a collaborative work environment with a team and across business areas
Full understanding of GxP requirements SOPs ICH guidelines USP requirements and FDA guidance
Proven troubleshooting and critical thinking skills; proven ability to direct others through these activities
Expert-level skills for design and review of complex automated platforms and/or processes
Demonstrated coaching and mentoring skills
Knowledge of general chemistry separation science immunochemistry molecular genomics biomarker and/or vaccine science related concepts and/or technologies (as applicable) systems
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Proven ability to identify and implement common efficiencies across multiple programs/projects
Proven ability to cope with a dynamic work environment
Demonstrated strategic planning skills
Strong organizational agility and demonstrated drive for results
Directs through lower management levels and/or highly skilled specialist employees who exercise
significant latitude and independent judgment. Often heads one or more departments or a large
