Job Description

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

The assistant athletic director is a school-based leader who will assist the Athletic Director in the planning and implementation of all VHSL athletic and student activities. Duties include but are not limited to assisting in the supervision of all VHSL programs; assisting the Athletic Director with special assignments; working cooperatively with the Athletic Director to ensure that all coaches of all VHSL teams know their described duties and responsibilities; insisting upon implicit compliance to all athletic department stakeholders with all the rules and regulations of the school county and the VHSL.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

The minimum performance expectations include but are not limited to the following functions/tasks:

  • Organizes and administers the overall program of interscholastic athletics for the school.
  • Promotes good school and community relations by keeping the community aware of and responsive to the athletic program.
  • Monitors supervision of teams and student athletes after school hours.
  • Assists with supervising weekend and vacation time athletic events.
  • Supervises home and away athletic events as scheduled by Athletic Director.
  • Assists in supervising all ticket sales of home athletic events.
  • Assists with the collection of sports fees each season.
  • Coordinates student athlete special recognitions/honors (all state pictures award nights local media recognitions etc.).
  • Assists with managing team inventories.
  • Tracks student athlete school related issues (grades discipline) and reports to coaching staff of any concerns when applicable.
  • Supervises all District and Regional Tournaments scheduled at the high school.
  • Assumes responsibilities of Athletic Director when necessary.
  • Coordinates buses for varsity and junior varsity away games.
  • Provides home athletic schedules to game officials associations and verify game officials for all athletic programs.
  • Works with the coaches to develop schedules for all athletic events including practice schedules.
  • Makes entries in computer programs (games rosters etc.) for all varsity and junior varsity sports.
  • Promotes activities designed to foster school spirit among students for the athletic teams.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to professional growth.
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrates regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Adheres to the appropriate code of ethics.
  • Performs other duties consistent with the position assigned as may be requested by the Principal or Athletic Director.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Excellent organization skills;
  • Knowledge of Virginia High School League policies procedures and regulations; and
  • Other such qualifications that the school board might accept in lieu of any of the above.
  • Be recommended by the division superintendent and appointed by the school board.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • College degree in education with a background in athletic administration and/or coaching multiple years

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS

Duties performed typically in the central office and throughout the division. Frequent walking standing stooping lifting up to approximately 40 pounds and occasional lifting of equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds may be required. Other limited physical activities are required. Travel to schools throughout the division and central office is required. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Regular contact with staff members administrators and parents is required. Contact with parents by phone and in person is necessary.

EVALUATION

The supervisor will evaluate performance on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
