Job Description

The Assistant Director for Maintenance & Trades is responsible for the planning coordination and supervision of the daily operations and maintenance activities related to campus facilities. This includes oversight of skilled trades such as electrical plumbing HVAC carpentry and general maintenance. The role ensures a safe well-maintained and operational campus environment while promoting sustainability efficiency and customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate day-to-day operations of all building maintenance and trade-related activities.
  • Plan and implement preventive maintenance schedules for campus infrastructure.
  • Oversee service calls work orders and emergency maintenance requests ensuring timely resolution.
  • Direct train and evaluate maintenance staff including electricians plumbers HVAC technicians and carpenters.
  • Promote a culture of safety accountability and teamwork among trade employees.
  • Assist with recruitment onboarding and professional development of maintenance staff.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Facilities on small to mid-sized renovation and repair projects.
  • Monitor project progress vendor performance timelines and budgets.
  • Coordinate contractor work and ensure compliance with university standards and codes.
  • Assist in the development and management of budgets for maintenance and trades operations.
  • Monitor inventory and order necessary supplies tools and equipment.
  • Recommend cost-saving measures and efficient use of resources.
  • Ensure compliance with federal state and local building codes and OSHA safety regulations.
  • Conduct regular inspections to identify facility concerns and hazards.
  • Support emergency preparedness and response related to facility operations.
  • Serve as a liaison with university departments to understand and meet facility needs.
  • Provide timely updates and communication regarding maintenance schedules and disruptions.
  • Respond to facility-related complaints or issues with a solutions-focused approach.


Education

  • Bachelors degree in Facilities Management Engineering Construction Management or related field (required); equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in facilities maintenance with at least 2 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
  • Must be able to lift 20 pounds.
